KING LEAR

What the patient was like before the traumatic events. King Lear’s history begins in a seemingly ordered society. The king is on his rightful throne and it seems like everything is right with the world. As a King, Lear makes his views known using nature such as ; “with plenteous rivers, and wide-skirted meads, We make the lady” (I i 67-68). Everyone serves a function and respects King Lear. King Lear clearly considers himself to be prudent, more powerful, and much more important than he actually is. Due to his high rank, he is often praised for foolishness. King Lear’s pride and arrogance are made evident when he attempts to boost his own ego by challenging his three daughters to profess their love for him before the assembled court “Which of you shall we say doth love us most” (I i 53). Goneril and Regan use flattery, exaggeration, imagery and consonance to make a good impression on their father hoping to gain a fair third of the kingdom, as expected by King Lear.
