Character Analysis “Later, with Mom drinking so much, all Kenny had was me. I wanted to tell him that I did something in the war” (Myers 61). The story known as Fallen Angels, written by Walter Myers, is a book about the struggles of the Vietnam War as a United States army soldier. Even through the struggles of war, Richard Perry, the protagonist, has something to fight for. He has his little brother Kenny Perry. Kenny is a defenseless, strong, not very skilled.
Kenny is a small and defenseless young black man who lives in Harlem, New York. Kenny was an easy target to get bullied. In the book Perry states that his mother would see to it that his little brother stays in school if he sent money back home to pay for clothes (Myers 14). This leads one to believe Kenny depends on his brother. When Perry was in Vietnam, he thought about Kenny when he had down time; Perry once thought “There was a kid in his class who used to bother him a lot. The kid used to call him a punk and push him around” (Myers 87). This leads one to think Kenny is not a fighter. …show more content…

His father has not been around and his mother is an alcoholic. On top of this his closest friend, his brother, is deployed in Vietnam. Even with the bad hand Kenny has been dealt he is still a very strong young man. He has the strength to one day be able get his grades up and play basketball like his older brother Richie; to quote him “Kenny always looked up to me. He could not play ball as well as I had when I was his age, and he did not do well in school.” He continues “Maybe it had something to do with dad leaving when Kenny was four.
