The Watson’s Go To Birmingham, is a book narrated by Kenny Watson, the middle son of the Watson family. Kenny experiences physical and emotional insecurities that follow him from his daily life in Flint, Michigan to Birmingham, Alabama and back. Kenny made the most self changes due to several life experiences during school, his relationship with his older brother Byron, his traumatic time in Birmingham, and his realization of his inner strength upon returning to Flint. Kenny believed his physical and emotional insecurities would follow him forever, until Byron made him realize just how strong and courageous he really was. Kenny constantly is disappearing to his hiding spot being the couch, where he thinks magic powers will make his problems go away, another tale Byron has fed him. Byron has taken on a more loving and concerned roll to Kenny while he is sorting through his insecurities, by checking on him and sleeping on the couch next to him. In chapter 15, Kenny has a meltdown when Byron brings him to the bathroom to show him his chin hair and is reminded of his lazy eye when he looks for his mustache in the mirror. As Kenny cries through his pain, Byron reminds him of all of his real strengths. Kenny realizes from Byron that there is no “Wool Pool” and that if it wasn’t for him, Joetta would have never left the church, so he actually saved her life. He realizes just how important he is to the family. Kenny’s self changes happened from his school experiences, his and Byron’s relationship, and the vivid events that happened to him and his family in Birmingham, Alabama that he brought with them to Flint, Michigan. Kenny’s physical and emotional changes played a good and bad role that turned out good life experiences for him. But if it wasn’t for Byron’s self changes, he would have never been able to change Kenny for the better.
