In this world today, energy has never been at its finest. Energy resources are used to heat our homes, power our electronics, and save peoples life. Many people are unaware on where some of our energy comes from and the process it undergoes. In 2009, Cenovus Energy became a Canadian oil based company that produces “energy resources the world needs” (Cenovus Energy, n.d.). This company has and continues to heavily make a strong impact on Canada’s oil sands resources and have “conventional oil and natural gas productions” located in Alberta and Saskatchewan (Cenovus Energy, n.d.). The more public interest and media on any given environmental issue Cenovus Energy faces, the more pressure the regulators face. The issues of greenhouse gas emissions, tailing ponds, and endangered wildlife have all been increasing matters of focus. This can result as to why there is an extensive and lengthy application process before Cenovus receives approval for an oil sand project. The application process known as the environmental impact assessment (EIA) includes “environmental conditions, information about vegetation and wildlife, and models potential environmental impacts over the life of the project” (Cenovus Energy, n.d.). Cenovus Energy Inc. has spent millions of dollars to discover new founding’s of research. The company has received a handful of awards and recognition in regards to exceptional corporate responsibility practices. A few of the awards have been awarded from known sources such as: Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, Euronext Vigeo World 120 Index, and Maclean’s Magazine (Cenovus Energy, n.d.).
This oil base company will always have an environmental activist on the opposite end. Getting rid of one hundred percent of harmful emissions is extremely complicated. Although, Cenovus has advance technology to reduce its carbon footprint it will never fully omit the evaporation of gases into the air. With this continuing to be an environmental impact, there will always be a challenge to fully satisfy all wants. The ideal solution is to have no harmful effects coming from the in situ process. The realistic view is that there will always be a discharge of gases that the regulatory system can’t fully expect oil sand companies to fully omit. Another challenge the company faces is to keep up with other rivals such as Suncor Energy Inc., Imperial Oil Ltd., and Syncrude Canada
