The novel, The Catcher In The Rye by J.D Salinger, is set in the 1950’s and is narrated by Holden Caulfield a 17-year-old boy how goes on an excursion to New York after beginning kicked out of another private school. Throughout the novel holden’s unpredictable and Paradoxical behavior point him not being a normal teenager and even being mentally ill. some people may say that his actions as those of an average teenager. Some of Holden's actions point to him have Borderline Personality disorder. One recurring symptom of Borderline Personality disorder is holden's drug and alcohol abuse holden states “ I have no wind if you want to know the truth. I'm quite a heavy smoker.” (Salinger 7). Holden states that he is a heavy smoker that's why he can't run. this can show how holden has self-destructive behavior which is a symptom of borderline personality disorder. Another symptom of bad that Holden has Are flashbacks and moods wing Holden illustrates the time after she found out about his brother damage “ I broke all the windows in the garage. I don't blame them. I really don't. I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it. I even tried to break all the windows on the station wagon we had that summer, but my hand was already broken and everything by that time, and I couldn't do it.” ( Salinger 44). Holden is having a mental breakdown and brakes all the windows in his garage which shows he has the lack of restraint and has self-destructive behavior. this helps to diagnose holden with depression and/or borderline personality disorder. Holden tends to prefer kids over adult he tends to refuse to adults as phones throughout the novel. This is because Holden does believe adults have any innocence and kids do. Holden wishes to be the catcher in there he wishes to save kids innocence in part of the novel holden states “ I keep picturing all these little kids playing some sort of game in this big field of rye and all…..and I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start going off the cliff.” (191 ). most teenagers don't think about spending all their time-saving kids from falling off a cliff. But later on, Holden says, “ I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all” ( 191 ) Holden wishes to spend all his time trying to see kids from falling off a cliff in translation he wants to save kids from growing up he wants to save them from losing their innocents. Your average teenager doesn't think about kids losing their innocence and that becoming an adult means a loss of innocents. This is wanting to make Holden different from other teens. This is why I think holden isn't your average
