It was our fifth day in the Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico, the halfway point of the trek. I as the Crew Leader was responsible for the other 11 members of the crew, including 4 adults. I was in charge, and amazingly the adults rarely tried to take over, although they would strongly advise me what to do in some situations. Phil, with the exception of me, the oldest scout and the Chaplain for the trip, was my second. Together we dealt with problems of making sure everyone carried the right amount of stuff in their pack to who had to cook and cleanup each day. The trip had gone well so far, no injuries, and the worst problem had been a faulty backpack. As I walked I thought about the upcoming campsite. Supposedly this one had running water from a solar powered pump—so had the last night’s site but the tank was too low to use for anything but cooking because the of how cloudy it had been of late. But today was bright and shinny, and hot, so I didn’t think there would be a problem.

What do we do on Outward Bound? Outward Bound an experience unlike any other, can last for many, many days. We are out in the wilderness with no electronics for at least a whole week. Remember that no matter how much you plan , how well you know the trail, or how closely you keep track of time sometimes you will become sidetracked or disoriented and night fall arrives. This happens when some of us are not paying attention or are unfamiliar with a trail.
The third thing I would do is go horseback riding and explore the land while riding a horse. I would bring a lot of water with me to drink because there are no water stops along the horse trail. I would also bring a lot of bug spray because there are a lot of ticks, mosquitoes, and deer flies in the park. I would have to stay away from the wild bison because they will charge at you without warning.

Have you ever been forced to do something with your friend that you KNOW is gonna be bad? That’s how it was for me on my camping trip with my uncle and his friends and my friend Zeek. We have been planning this trip for quite some time and this time we brought buggies so we could ride in the dunes now I have practice driven these and they’re pretty fast I don’t remember exactly how fast but the vehicle had good power. Add that with a risk taker friend and you go at dangerous and scary levels of speed though I was very cautious so maybe I was just being scared at the same time.
