Caprine arthritis encephalitis is a viral disease of goats. Caprine arthritis encephalitis, also known as CAE, is a lentivirus that is part of the retrovirus family. Another type of retrovirus is the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS. CAE is normally spread orally through goats. It has been linked to being spread through semen of an infected buck. CAE is a virus that can attack the nervous system. All potential buyers need to have their animals tested before purchasing. Bringing just one infected goat home can easily pass the disease on to the other goats.
CAE cannot be spread through other species besides sheep. This disease can only attack other animals in the Caprine family, such as Boer goats, Spanish goats, Dairy goats, Fainting goats, and has also been linked to sheep. Wild ruminants cannot get infected with CAE, but they have found another form of lentivirus in them. This lentivirus is not a concern to domestic goats and sheep at this time.
Caprine arthritis encephalitis can cause many different symptoms. Symptoms can include arthritis, mastitis in lactating does, weight loss, pneumonia and encephalitis. Some do not have any symptoms, while others have many.

By selling an infected goat to a previously CAE negative herd can result in the entire herd being exposed to the disease. Before buying a goat every buyer should ask for blood work to be done. The goats need to be tested before purchasing the animal. If the animal is positive the buyer should rethink the option to buy. All goats should also have a health check before buying to check for other viruses and infections such as pink eye, sore mouth, ring worm and Caseous Lymphadenitis (CL). With the exception of one, all other stallions were infected with T. equigenitalis indirectly via handling or contaminated fomites at breeding or collection facilities (Erdman et al., 2011). According to Erdman et al. (2011), this outbreak saw the largest number of horses that tested positive for the disease since the first outbreak in 1978. The source of the outbreak was most likely determined to be a stallion imported from Denmark in 2000 that had not been detected positive for T. equigenitalis neither upon pre-import testing in the country of origin nor quarantine testing in the United States (Erdman et al., 2011). The importation of this stallion in the United States subsequently led to subsequent transmission of infection between the years 2004 and 2009 (Erdman et al., 2011).
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a fatal neuro-degenerative, transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) of the family Cervidae (Hamir, et.al., 2006). The family Cervidae includes mule deer, Odocolileus hemionus, white-tailed deer, Odocolileus virginianus, Rocky Mountain elk, Cervus elaphus nelsoni, and moose, Alces alces shirasi, among others (Sigurdon & Aguzzi, 2007). CWD is a prion disease, meaning it is a protein caused infection, that occurs naturally in the deer family (Song & Lawson, 2009). This protein is suspected to be an abnormal isoform (PrPSc) of the naturally occurring host prion protein (PrPC) (Blanchong, et. Al., 2009). Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), mad cow disease, is a similar prion effecting cattle as CWD affects Cervidae. Although, scientists are not sure of transmission route it is suspected that CWD is transmissible and infectious through direct contact with infected individuals or through environmental contamination (Song & Lawson, 2009). Tests have been performed showing susceptibility of altered mice to oral transmission, mimicking the suspected route of entry, and the incubation appears slower but lasts longer with oral infection (Trifilo, et.al., 2007). The approximate time from the initial infection to death is three years.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory and an autoimmune disease that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s tissue (Rheumatoid arthritis, 2017). This disease affects the entire body, which is called a systemic (means entire body) disease. Arthritis is derived from the word part arthr-, which means “joint,” and -itis, which means “inflammation,” so altogether it means “inflammation of the joints.” It creates inflammation that causes the tissue that lines the inside of joints (synovium) to thicken. About 1.5 million people in the U.S. are affected. It affects all races, but it affects three times as many women than men (What is Rheumatoid Arthritis, n.d.). Overtime, rheumatoid arthritis causes painful swelling that can potentially result in bone erosion or joint deformity, which leads up to physical disabilities. RA can affect more than just your joints, but can spread to body systems, skin, eyes, lungs, heart, blood vessels, e.t.c (Rheumatoid arthritis, 2017).
Normally, cows in Northern Europe in places such as Denmark live normal lives simply grazing on grass, and existing. However, there have been recent changes that have disrupted this normal activity. Generally the bluetongue virus (spread by Culicoides imicola, a biting midge) has been confined to Southern Europe and other places around the Mediterranean. But with the increase in temperature throughout the area, the midge has been allowed to migrate northward. This new pest is a nuisance and causes lots of difficulties to farmers in the area. When a cow contracts this disease, they usually also receive oral ulcers, salivation, stiffness, fever and eventually the inevitable- death (Merck Veterinary Manual NP). Because of the increase in temperature, midges have spread around the globe infecting livestock and creating terrible trouble for many farmers.
The possibility of someone getting the disease from consumption of the meat is also very slim. In Europe, there have been over 200,000 cases of mad-cow disease and only 150 people have died from consuming the infected meat. So, really, the chances of you getting mad-cow disease from just eating the meat is very low. Even with that being said, I still believe that any cow with mad-cow disease should be dealt with accordingly, in other words killed and incinerated in order to stop the disease from spreading. If its meat has already been distributed the meat should immediately be recalled.
An animal infected with CWD will have neural loss, astrogliosis, which is an abnormal increase in the number of astrocytes in the brain, and spongiform lesions (Abrams et al., 2011). The infected particles are spread all throughout the body including the brain, spinal cord, eyes, peripheral nerves, and lymphoreticular tissues (Belay et al., 2004). Most of the infection, however, is located in the Central Nervous System.

While many forms of encephalitis exist, West Nile Virus was first isolated and identified in the West Nile District of Uganda in 1937. The virus, which was seemingly isolated to North Eastern Africa, became recognized as a cause of severe human meningoencephalitis (inflammation of the spinal cord and brain) in elderly patients during an outbreak in Israel in 1957. In addition to the human victims of this disease, the virus was found Egypt and France during 1960s to have fatal effects within horses. While this disease spread through Northern African and Southern Europe, 1999 marked the first appearance of West Nile Virus in North America, with encephalitis reported in both humans and horses.
However, health concerned organizations want to ban the use of these products due to the increasing fears that they can cause harm to the consumers. For over 50 years, antibiotics have been added to the food of animals such as poultry, cattle and pigs. The main purpose for doing so is to lower the risk of disease in animals. Farm animals are housed together in overcrowded areas, which are very dirty. The hygiene level can get to such a poor state that they are often in contact with their own excreta as well as excreta of the other animals they are housed with and because of tight single air space they share, the likelihood of catching diseases from one another is further increased and very often a whole heard can be infected at one time.
Wear gloves and proper cloths if handling the infected animals to prevent the direct contact.
There are thing that make people more susceptible to contracting zoonotic diseases. Either it’s knowingly or unknowingly, humans are prone to the dangers of being direct targets of zoonotic diseases. Zoonotic diseases are transmittable in various ways weather through ingestion or direct contact. There are countless numbers of zoonotic diseases some more commonly known than others but all equally important. Preventing the contraction or spread of zoonotic diseases is easily manageable with medication and vaccines along with following small tips that not only protect humans but the animal population as well.

Hantavirus is a virus in the Bunyaviridae family of viruses. Dr. Lee Ho Wang from Korea discovered Hantavirus in the early 1950s. Though the virus is commonly found in rodents, it does not cause disease in the rodents. Disease results when the virus is transmitted to humans. A common way of contracting Hantavirus is from breathing in dust that has been contaminated by an infected rodent’s saliva, feces or urine or the infected dust gets into broken skin. It is also transmitted by the bite of an infected rodent. So far, it has not been confirmed that Hantavirus can be passed on from person to person. The most common places to contract Hantavirus are Korea, China or most countries in Asia. In Korea, Hantavirus seems to have two major “seasons;” May to June and October to November are the times of year when the disease is more prevalent because the rodent populations are higher during these times. There are two forms of Hantavirus, the mild illness found in Scandinavia, and the more severe illness found in the Far East and Central Europe.
This particular bug will manifest in the kidney and in the liver. It can in its most severe form cause kidney failure, heart failure, and shock. This bacteria, L.interrogans, multiplies inside of the organs, generally it is in the kidney, liver, CNS. L. interrogans is normally a zoonosis, and is found commonly in dogs, cattle, and swine. It is generally transmitted through contact of the infected urine. Since the L. interrogans is shed in the urine, it is easy for cattle pens, water supplies, and etc. to be easily contaminated. Many times Leptospirosis is caused from contaminated water, semen from bulls, and contaminated feed.
The name of the creature responsible is Yersinia Pestinis (Clones). The pathogen travels from person to person pneumonically (Black Death). This sickness can even effect animals such as cows, sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens. A large amount of sheep died, so many died that there was a European wool shortage (History).
