On October 1, 2017, a man by the name of Stephen Paddock shot at a large crowd of people who attended a concert in Las Vegas. CNN is calling it the “deadliest mass shooting in modern history”. Many have been left bewildered at how one man could cause such atrocity. However before this incident, there have been many other shootings that have lead to the deaths of innocent lives. These unfortunate events have stirred up controversy on whether there should be more gun control or not. The Texas Campus Carry Policy should be implemented in colleges since it guarantees the protection and well-being of all citizens on campus grounds
The Campus Carry policy for The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is in place to guarantee the safety of the students and employees. It is stated that on campus grounds, open carry is prohibited for both licensed and unlicensed citizens. However, a licensed gun owner can have the weapon on their person only if it is concealed. License holders are responsible for knowing the location of their handgun at all times. They must keep it in a place that is out of reach and safe. There are areas of the university where having a weapon is prohibited. These areas include but not limited to Cortez Hall, MAIN Building, and Life and Health Sciences building. Over the years, the amount of school shootings in the United States has increased greatly. More than two hundred shootings have occurred in American schools. Having concealed carry in a university or college can help lower the possibility of an active shooting.
