Bullying and harassment is a problem in any school across the United States and is surely recognizable by many. Bullying is a common thing that happens in school because students think it is funny to do or want to do it to seem “cool” to others. Physical bullying does not really happen in high school as much as it did in elementary school or middle school however, verbal and emotional bullying remains constant. According to NoBullying.com’s online article, High School Bullying, the author states, “Every day, 160,000 teens skip school because of bullying”. This shows that many kids face bullying everyday and decide to miss school or skip classes rather than learn because they are scared of being a target. In many situations, someone will call a female a slut or a whore for little or no reason and make that person feel awful inside and out. Some people may not realize it, but being called a slut, whore, etc., can really hurt someone’s feelings and can cause horrible thoughts. Being called nasty names makes one feel less of themselves and it is sad to know it happens all the time in high schools all over the U.S. According to Scholastic’s online article, Bullying and Teasing: No Laughing Matter, the author talks about the effects on bullying when he says, “If your child is the victim of bullying, he may suffer physically and emotionally, and his schoolwork will likely show it.” This is not only happening to one or two kids in school, it is happening to multiple kids and will continue to happen in the future. Bullies may or may not know the harm they are causing to other kids when they call the victim names or embarrass the victim, but will go on and keep doing the same thing to feel better about themselves. There are kids who do not leave other students alone and harass them everyday for simply the fun of it or if one wants something from another. There are different types of harassment, but one that is commonly known in many places is sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual approaches, requests for sexual favors, and any other verbal or physical behavior of sexual nature. Sexual harassment seems to happen a lot in schools everywhere and it mostly happens to females from their male classmates. There has even been cases where students are sexually harassed by the school’s own staff. Students have admitted to being sexually harassed by their own teachers or counselors and have been deeply hurt because of it. Canadian Red Cross’ online article, Facts on Bullying and Harassment, states “Victims of harassment report a loss of interest in school activities, more absenteeism, lower-quality schoolwork, lower grades, and more skipping/dropping classes, tardiness and truancy.” This quote displays what some students everywhere go through in school due to any type of harassment.
