Concentration is a skill, a choice, can be learned, needs to be practiced daily, is subjective in assessment, is dependent on the sport, the task, and the speed at which the task is occurring. Concentration is the action of focusing one’s attention with mental effort. Focusing is the center of interest of one’s concentration and attention is the actual act of applying the mind to something with readiness in order to zoom-in with an intentional effort. I believe concentration, especially in a jet or while engaged in a high risk sport such as rock climbing, rests on one’s situational awareness or SA. My objective is to build and nurture their concentration with confidence and motivation to push their limits to maintain their minds “in the moment”. I also want to allow them to experience the failures of lost concentration that can be caused by distractions, task saturation, channelized attention, and loss of situational awareness. This way they can know what it feels like and while also having the ability to refocus and to get back to a normal with optimum arousal in an ideal performance state within their Individual Zone of Optimal Functioning (IZOF) with total awareness and confidence. First, they have to understand IZOF, awareness, and my Confidence Model plus have a foundation in ethical decision making. Weekly Weekly, I will monitor their progress toward goal achievement and see if there is a relationship between my perception of their concentration and confidence. Adjustments will be made to their processes to increase their progress toward higher performance with increased confidence and motivation.
Weely, I will reinforce to my athletes that focus is a skill, is controllable, is a choice, is a catalyst to great performance. I also know that I am responsible for teaching both the sport skill and the ability to focus. Using diagrams as presented in this paper will help me teach them with a visual aid.
Weekly, I will also stress the importance of using their focusing abilities in their academics classrooms to increase academic performance. This would include also how to take notes, study, and stay organized. Organization in life is power because it frees up space for the brain or increases attentional capacity to think clearer and
