In the document “Doomed to Perish”: George Catlin’s Depictions of the Mandan by Katheryn S. Hight, she analyzes the work of George Catlin while he traveled to the Mandan colony west of the Missouri River. Hight identifies that Catlin created a false and imaginative depiction of the Mandan Indians based on his social and political ideas which ended up creating an entertainment enterprise rather than reporting history. Catlin’s extravagant depictions of the Indians, which did have an impact on the Indian Policy in America, seemingly motivates Hight to write on this subject.
The piece “The Old Man Isn 't There Anymore” by Kellie Schmitt is a passage showing that nobody really knows any other culture. In the passage Schmitt response to not seeing the old man anymore is to call the cleaning-lady to see what has happened to him and why all the neighbors were sobbing. “The old man isn 't there anymore” she replied, which I guessed it was her baby Chinese way of telling me he died” (Schmitt 107). Ceremonies can be very informational about the family member and their traditions, people should get more information about who the ceremony is for. The piece uses description, style, and support through out.

The settings are held not only on planet Earth, but in other planets like Camazotz and Orion´s Belt. I have never been to another planet, but I think it would be really amazing.

The Story of an Hour is a short story of Ms. Mallard, a woman with a heart condition who receives short term good news. Chopin uses contrast between independence, marriage, and gender to show how hidden emotions can effect a woman’s actions in the time period where women did not have much power or right to speak what came to their mind.
This book starts off simple in the beginning then surely escalates. Annie Lockwood, the main character is a typical teenage girl who just got out of school for the summer. Her boyfriend Sean isn't the romantic type at all. As she goes to Stratton Point where Sean is, to tell him that the party at the beach for the beginning of summer will start soon and she wanted him there with her. While he was working on a car, she walks into the old Stratton Mansion and looks around and all of a sudden she feels a falling feeling, like an earthquake almost, and then it was like only half of her was there. She could hear playing music, she even saw sun coming through the windows, and then bumped into someone. It was Hiram Stratton, Jr.. When he approaches her, she’s frightened, then Annie runs out of the house, and gets onto her bicycle and rides away. Finally, Strat was able to catch up with Annie and they went to the beach and sat there. That was where Annie had learned what year it was and they learned each other's names. Harriet Ranleigh was in the mansion in a tower, spying on Anna Sophia and Strat. She was angry and jealous when she saw the ...
In the article “We Will Go Forward From This Moment” by Leonard Pitts Jr. he talks about nine eleven and how America will move forward from this tragedy and come back strong, gunning for the person responsible. In Kate Chopin's short story "The Story of an Hour," there is much irony. The first irony detected is in the way that Louise reacts to the news of the death of her husband, Brently Mallard. Before Louise's reaction is revealed, Chopin alludes to how the widow feels by describing the world according to her perception of it after the "horrible" news.
Another reason to categorize this story as modern is that it implies rather than states facts and psychological truths. The story implies that the house is flawed, but these flaws are overlooked when the narrator states “perfect, perfect, perfect little house!” even though the dollhouse is flawed greatly. Numerous clues in the story imply that the house is a symbol of social status even though the story never states this fact. Another part of this story that implies rather than states is when the sisters “sounded as though they were in despair” and in my opinion is seems as though they were acting as if they were sad to be empathetic when they really were not.
“Downtime is where we become ourselves, looking into the middle distance, kicking at the curb, lying on the grass, or sitting on the stoop and staring at the tedious blue of the summer sky” (Quindlen 82). Anna Quindlen is an author of children’s books and is well known for her comments on contemporary life. In her work “Doing Nothing is Something”, Quindlen makes an observation about the lack of free time that children have in their lives. She begins with a comparison to her life as a child, explaining the boredom that she used to have during the summer. However, she continues with how children now are as overscheduled as their parents, which reduces the amount of time they have for creativity. Furthermore, she explains that this is because of the parents’ expectations for what their child will do in the future and what they could do if left alone. As a final point, she illustrates her belief that children can still have free time, despite the immense number of activities that can take place. Despite Quindlen’s point, she has missed the importance of children being able to find creativity in such a busy schedule.

Learning many skills and techniques from different professors, I believe that I have obtained skills that are beneficial to school, studies, and life. Two semesters of English in college has prepared me more than my four years of English in high school; I have become more confident in both reading and writing. As an immigrant, English became my second language. Although I had a hard and long time adopting the new language, I managed to learn it after a few years. However, I still had room for improvement as a writer and reader. English 1A, my first real English class, gave me a lot on my plate. I was unaware of my professor’s requirements when it came to writing tasks and skills. After a full course with my professor, I have improved drastically with one technique that I acknowledged in her class. Her technique was to criticize a student’s essay harshly and give out below average grades. Thus, she raises awareness to her students that they need to improve if they want a decent grade. Students were given a chance to revise their essays to receive a higher grade. Based on the informative feedbacks left by the professor, a majority of the students were able to identify their mistakes, and revamp their essays into a masterpiece. Due to the low scores and crude comments, students often feel aggravated and tend to ignore it after. However, the feedbacks are useful and continue to give me an opportunity to learn and improve myself as a writer in the future.
