Another reason to categorize this story as modern is that it implies rather than states facts and psychological truths. The story implies that the house is flawed, but these flaws are overlooked when the narrator states “perfect, perfect, perfect little house!” even though the dollhouse is flawed greatly. Numerous clues in the story imply that the house is a symbol of social status even though the story never states this fact. Another part of this story that implies rather than states is when the sisters “sounded as though they were in despair” and in my opinion is seems as though they were acting as if they were sad to be empathetic when they really were not.
In The Story of an Hour Kate Chopin gives a very inside look at her feelings about marriage, female independence, and the human will. The first description that Chopin gives of Louise (the main character of the story) is her heart trouble. The way that it is suggested, gives the reader reason to believe that the ailment may not only be physical but also mental. Louise's sister, Josephine and Richards treat Louise with great care as though she is fragile. They are afraid that breaking the news of her husband's death to her may be harmful to her condition. When Louise hears the news of her husband's death, Chopin tells us that she "wept with wild abandonment." This apparently was not the expected response. This is known, because Chopin tells the reader that many women would have received the message and been so paralyzed by it that they would not have been able to show emotion. Therefore, it is assumed that Louise is a rather passionate person.
The Story of an Hour is a short story of Ms. Mallard, a woman with a heart condition who receives short term good news. Chopin uses contrast between independence, marriage, and gender to show how hidden emotions can effect a woman’s actions in the time period where women did not have much power or right to speak what came to their mind.
The Major theme in “Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin is the forbidden pleasures of freedom for women. This story was written in a time where women had no independence. They lived their lives for their husbands and not for themselves. While reading we see the oppression women faced in marriages, and the guilt they faced when desiring their freedom from the lives that they lived.
She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves. ( This description of the scenery is very happy, usually not how one sees the world after hearing devastating news of her husbands death.)

In "The Story of an Hour," I can relate to so many different things that go on in this short tragic story. After reading the story I almost felt like Louise Mallard and I were living the same life with different events and a different outcome. Everything about the two of us comes down to being always misunderstood and just wanting to be free.
For women, the 19th century was a time of inequality, oppression, and inferiority to their male counterparts. A woman's social standing depended solely on her marital status. For these reasons many women were forced to lead a life of solitude and emotional inadequacy, often causing depression. In Kate Chopin's short story "The Story of an Hour," setting plays a significant role in illustrating the bittersweet triumph of Mrs. Mallard's escape from oppression at the ironic cost of her life.

In “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin a woman, Louise Mallard, makes a startling and disturbing realization about her true feelings. After she is informed by her sister Josephine that her husband Brently had been killed in a train accident, Louise instantly breaks down and sobs into her arms. She then goes upstairs to her room, and stares out the window as a sudden apprehension comes to her: she is now free, her own person, and she does not have her husband to hold her back anymore. She becomes overwhelmingly excited about what her new life could now be, and the moment she goes back downstairs with Josephine, Brently walks through the door unharmed. Before Louise sees, Brently’s friend Richards and Josephine attempt to shield her eyes from the shocking development. They fail, however, and Louise dies on the spot from her heart disease.
Kate Chopin’s story “The Story of an Hour” focuses on a married woman who does not find happiness in her marriage. When she hears of her husband’s death, the woman does not grieve for long before relishing the idea of freedom. Chopin’s story is an example of realism because it describes a life that is not controlled by extreme forces. Her story is about a married nineteenth-century woman with no “startling accomplishments or immense abilities” (1271). Chopin stays true to reality and depicts a life that seems as though it could happen to any person. Frank Norris comments that realism is the “smaller details of every-day life, things that are likely to happen between lunch and supper, small passions, restricted emotions…” (1741). “A Story of an Hour” tells the tale of an unhappy married woman which is not an unrealistic or extreme occurrence. Chopin conveys in her short story the feeling of marriage as an undesired bondage to some married women in the nineteenth century.
In its historical context A Doll’s House was a radical play which forced its audience to question the gender roles which are constructed by society and make them think about how their own lives are a performance for Victorian society.

The play helps to portray the different struggles women faced during the 19th century with gender roles, and how the roles affected their relationships with men as well as society. It also helps to show the luxury of being a male during this time and how their higher status socially over women affected their relationships with woman and others during this time period.

Coming to the end of this class I have learned a lot about what it takes to make a piece of literature leave you feeling a certain way. A lot goes into setting up a atmosphere in a story because you are not really seeing it in front of your face so you must imagine it. The author wants you to imagine a certain scene and feel a certain way through their words and descriptions. An important component to making a reader understand the atmosphere and visualize the scene is by the setting. Setting is where a specific event is taking place.
