Insanity Brought on By Loss The Story of an Hour Argument Death affects everyone differently, but death takes a strange toll on Louise Mallard. The news is presented to Mrs. Mallard gently because she has a heart problem. Her sister Josephine has to share horrible news with her about her beloved husband who has died in a railroad accident. The news comes out of nowhere and Louise cannot fathom what she is hearing. She will do anything to convince herself that she can live life without her deceased husband. Is losing a loved one enough to drive someone insane? Louise rushes to her room and weeps. She begins to convince herself that her life is going to be fine without her husband. Louise cannot control her sorrow; her loss is too oppressive. Her sadness is turning to what seems to be happiness. She begins to mutter the word “free” over and …show more content…

Josephine is very worried what Louise’s state of mind might make her do. She is also concerned she will make herself ill because of her impending heart issue. Louise is hesitant to leave her room and wants to be left alone. She is awestruck by her rash fantasy of the winters and summers to come that will be all hers. Louise eventually complies and opens the door; her thoughts are very hasty and her heart is worked up. The idea of losing her one true love has driven her mad.. Louise walks down the stairs alongside her sister as if she is content with life and nothing has happend. It is clear Louise has faced mental trauma; She has moved past her mourning stage in less than an hour. As they reach the bottom of the stairs they hear the door begin to rustle. The door opens and there stands Mr. Mallard. He was nowhere near the train accident and had not even heard the incident happened. Louise cannot handle the sight. Her Hysteria and delirium cause her heart to give out and she passes
