She was a slave at first but then she became a nurse.She also did California real estate.She was the first African American to be a founder of a church in Los Angels.She was also the most wealthy black person at that time. She was working but then she had three daughters Ellen,Ann,Harriet.In 1847 Robert smith moved his extend family and slaves.Her folks told her to go get there freedom back.So she did and helped some slaves.And that's when she started to make the churches. Also in 1884 she gave her land away for 1500 dollars.Then she moved away and and built commercial buildings.She continued to increase her business
Between 1924 and 1938,she was the executive director of YWCA facilities in Springfield,Ohio,Jersey City,New Jersey,Harlem,Philidelphia,Pennsylvania and Brooklyn. She married Merritt A Hedgeman in 1936. In addition,she was also the excutive director of the National Committee for a Permanet Fair Employment Practices Commission,she briefly served as the assistant Deam of Women at Howard University,as public relations consultant for Fuller Products Company,as a associate editor,columnist for the New York Age. Mary Elizabeth Bowser was born in 1839 on the Van Lew plantation, in Richmond, Virginia. Mary Elizabeth was born into slavery, and was forced to work as soon as she could. When Mary was very young, there was a big slave selling from the Van Lew plantation, her family members were traded away to other masters so no one knows for sure who her mom and dad really were. From around the age of three Mary was forced to work on the plantation, in the fields or even doing laundry.(Mary Elizabeth Bowser) John Van Lew believed that if the slaves wanted to get to have a place to sleep and food to eat then they should be required to work at the earliest age possible. Most of the slaves couldn’t start really working till around age three, so the plantation had a slave or two that would watch the “under age” kids that couldn’t work yet. Therefore the “under age” slaves moms could work and not be held back by their children.

In the 1840’s, the Perkins’ family worked in the brick-making factory, and they were wealthy for a short period of time. Many businesses collapsed and were bought out, so the wealth didn’t last long. In 1870, the Perkins’ turned to dairy farming to get their money. Shortly after, Frances’ father, Frederick married a woman by the name of Susan Bean. On April 10th, 1880 in Boston, Massachusetts Fannie Coralie Perkins was born. In 1884, when Fannie was four years old, Frederick and Susan had a second child, Ethel (Downey 7). Fannie was very close to her family her entire life. She often spoke of ancestors, she adored and their ways of thinking helped her when she had to make big decisions later on in her life.
Before she could get her little shop going a fire burnt down her business and her house with all of her belongings in 1871. Mary was having an awful time but managed to keep on trying. She finally got a job working with people who wanted to get decent wages and have their working environment improved. She also tried to stop child labor. Her work involved making speeches, recruiting members and organizing soup kitchens and women's auxiliary groups during strikes.

Mary Eliza Mahoney Biography Mary Eliza Mahoney was born May 7, 1845 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Smith, J, & Phelps, S, 1992) Mary Mahoney was the first African American professional nurse. She spent over 40 years as a private duty nurse going to sick people’s homes, nursing them back to health. She was such a wonderful private duty nurse that after joining a nursing directory, Mary was called upon time after time by the families that hired her all over the country, near and far away.
Harriet Tubman was an African American slave born in Dorchester County, Maryland in 1820. Harriet Tubman was also known as Moses, Minty, Harriet and Araminta Ross, being her madden name. Harriet Tubman was known to be the grand-daughter of Modesty, a slave imported from Africa. Harriet’s parents’ names were Benjamin Ross and Harriet Green. Harriet’s mother was also imported from Africa on a slave-ship, her mother was the daughter of a Caucasian American man and her father was a Negro. During Harriet’s childhood, she lived on a plantation owned by the Brodess family with her family. Her mother worked as a cook for the Brodess’ family.
