Corticosteroids The main pharmaceutical drugs used to treat and manage asthma are Beta2-adrenergic agonist and inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). Beta2-adrenergic agonists are used for relief and acute symptoms, while corticosteroids are to be taken daily to control inflammation. Inhaled corticosteroids are used as the first-line maintenance therapy. ICS are the most effective anti-inflammatory drug used in the management of asthma. ICS must be used long-term, as symptoms are likely to recur if they are discontinued.

ICS are synthetic drugs that resemble cortisol, which is a hormone that is naturally produced by the adrenal glands. They are deposited into the lungs, via a metered dose inhaler or dry powdered inhaler, and reduce airway inflammation …show more content…

This process is the same as to how pharmaceuticals work within the body. Because herbs naturally occur, they are thought to have significantly fewer side effects over western medicine.

Boswellia (Boswellia serrata)
Boswellia, also known as frankincense, is a tree found in North Africa, the Middle East India, and India. The resin found in Boswellia inhibits mediators of inflammation and the inflammatory response. It is commonly used for arthritis, asthma, and other inflammatory responses. A study comprised of 63 subjects shows that Boswellia has a large effect on reducing inflammation (Houssen et al., 2010). A study done over a 5-week trial concludes that Boswellia greatly improves FEV1 in asthmatic patients (Giles, 2001).

Butterbur (Petasites hybridus)
Butterbur plants are found in North America, Europe, and Asia. It has anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and analgesic effects. It is commonly used in treating seasonal allergies. in a study of people with mild to moderate asthma, butterbur was shown to reduce asthma symptoms and inflammation.
