In Celia, A Slave, a slave named Celia was sent to court because she committed homicide. However, the murder was justified, because she was trying to defend herself from her slave owner, Robert Newsom, who was attempting to rape her once again. This time around, Celia attempted to protect herself by striking Newsom, just in order to daze him for a bit. She did not intend to kill the man, but simply keep him away from her. Unfortunately, in Missouri in 1850, the only person that would be protected by law would be the slave owner, when it came to the rape of a slave. In the story, a black man named Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white woman. After the trial ended, they concluded with the obvious fact that Robinson did not commit the crime, and instead was assaulted by the woman, who was later beat by her father. To cover up the situation, they accuse Robinson, and it becomes clear that the white woman was lying by the end of the case. Regardless, as the unjust law works, Robinson was still executed for something he did not do. This story is similar in the sense that the law simply does not protect the rights of African Americans as strongly as a White family. In an article that I have read in a previous English class, a black man was shot to death simply because he looked suspicious during the time of the crime. The black was in fact a bystander, simply a witness who was going to help the victim during trial, but was shot to death by a police man, who thought differently. The class was able to decode one simple idea from all this: America is not safe for a Black man. The unjust laws are not as harsh as they were in the 1800’s, however this racial discrimination is extremely unjust especially in our society, which has advanced so far in all categories.

This book helps me understand how divided the republicans were before the Civil War because it shows how inadequate the law was during the time. The northerners who were trying to abolish slavery in the 1850’s created the Republican Party. The republic divided due to the politician discrepancies and issues. The conflicts that occurred within the government gradually led to the passion of the republican parties’ decision to abolish slavery. The matter was not settled until 1865, when the 13th amendment was
