Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be disowned by your own mother? Or even have your mother follow a man out of love, over you? Well in story, “Bastard out of Carolina”, Bone is the main character who is been through so much at a young age. Her experiences, have made become mature and things have suddenly become a lot more complicated. From losing her mother, to her mother choosing a man over bone after he’s raped her, but still having a big loving family. With this in mind, this leads me to why the book, “Bastard out of Carolina” shouldn’t be banned from high school. In the story, Bone is portrayed as a young girl who is growing up in Greenville County, South Carolina in the 1950’s, born fatherless to young mother by the age of 15, Anney Boatwright. Bone, who is pointed out to be different from her family, is expected a lot out of. She has to help with sister, maintain normality while being raped by her step father, and try not think about the bad. As a young person, that can be hard to maintain, especially if you being manipulated by man, who you want to be as your dad. This is sad situation a lot of kids go through, and shouldn’t. In the scenario of a young girl, you’re supposed to be considered a princess and hold the title high. You should have your mothers support, and be able to feel like you can tell your mother anything. In the book, B out of C, this was not the case. Bone was actually betrayed by her mother for a man’s love. A young girl should never feel obligated to feel bad for rape, or think it’s her fault to feel loved by her mother, just because a man put that thought into her
