THE MAJOR ESSAY (30%) The singer/songwriter Bob Dylan is known worldwide for his exceptional songs, mostly his protest songs. His fans have loved his protest songs like “The Death of Emmett Till”, “Oxford Town”, The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” etc. At some point, Bob Dylan decided to change his style and starting to sing and write his songs in a different way, his answer “ My songs have always been about protest”. Even though “Desolation Row”, “Simple Twist of Fate” and “Forgetful Heart” are not his “usual” protest songs, they do in fact touch that subject. At that moment, maybe he thought that she would be more than a friend. The man believed that she was his “twin”. This means that the women complemented the man. They probably had the same interest and the same values. And maybe she does too, but she doesn’t appreciate it as much as he does. Also in the text, it mentions that the man is hearing the ticking of the clocks (Verse 5, Line 1). This could be a sign that he is getting old. He could be afraid of not finding someone to spend the rest of his life with; in other words, he is running out of chances. In general, this song, in the eyes of Bob Dylan, could be considered a protest song because it’s a protest about life itself. Some people are fortunate to live a great and happy life where as other people is the total opposite, and to relate to the song, people are too cautious with there feelings. They are too scared to take that risk with someone without knowing the outcome. Maybe in his mind, she was the perfect fit, but since he never took a risk with her because he was afraid of what was going to happen, now he is mad because it could have been the best decision in his life.
