In my opinion, there really isn't any reason to block/terrif imports unless they are illegal items. Some have good intentions but end up causing more harm. For example, the book says on page 427 that if there were a terrif on tennis shoes thus increasing the price of tennis shoes from $30 to $60, it would help the tennis shoe business. But, now there will be less demand for shoes because of the high price, and the company would have to lower the price to attract customers. It might even have to decrease the price all the way back down to $30. Since labor wages are a lot higher in America, they might not be able to afford to stay in business because of the lack of sales. The play spike heels was written by Theresa Rebeck and directed by Deborah Mello. I viewed the play spike heels at the Miami Dade Community College Kendall campus auditorium. The play consisted of four characters; there were two males Andrew and Edward and two females Lydia and Georgie. The role of Andrew was performed by Arnaldo Carmouze and the role of Edward was played by Sheaun Mckinney. The part of Georgie was beautifully played by Natalie Morales and Lydia witch was performed by Karina Hernandez. This play took place in a Boston apartment during present time. The play opened up in a much undefined manner doing a poor job in explaining the characters that were being spoken about. For instance when the play began the characters of Lydia and Andrew were being spoken about but the audience had no idea who they were, even though the character of Lydia was a bit better explained than Andrew they still left some gaps. Another issue that was exaggerated in an un realistic way were the curse words, I can understand that the character Georgie was supposed to be bad mouthed but not even the worst mouthed person wouldn’t have repeated the “F” word so many times.
When people in America see foreign goods for outrageous prices and then they see American goods for normal prices, they are going to buy American products. Unfortunately, this is not the only effect of a protectionist policy. Foreign nations often get upset at the increase in American tariffs and respond by increasing their own tariffs on American goods. This weakens the sales of American goods to foreign nations. In order for the United States to have a favorable balance of trade, then they must have strong exports.
Have you ever thought about those little words in fine print that tell you where a product was made? How about the last time you put tires on your car? Before you made a decision on the purchase did you stop and ask where the tires are made? Probably not! You heard the only words you wanted to hear....good and cheap! When did we stop caring about where a product is made or did we ever? Why would this matter anyway and what importance is of it? Some may argue that free trade and imports give us purchasing power. They believe cheaper goods results in more money in our pocket to buy other goods. That theory is a farce with little to no data to support it. Buying American made supports job growth, the environment and human rights. The impact on us, our children and the future of America is greatly impacted on our purchasing decisions.
Since America’s policies towards Communism were clear, the trade embargo began to look like a more long-term intervention.
