Here at west we learn about the civil rights movement, and how African Americans gained equality in our freshman history class. And even though almost everyone knows February is Black history month, not many know how this custom started. Black History Month began in 1926. It was originally known as “Negro History Month”. It later grew to become National African American History Month. According to the website History, this tradition was started by Carter G. Woodson and the association for the study of negro life and history. Woodson was a noted African American historian, educator and publisher. They named the second week of February, 1926 as “Negro History Week”. Dr. Woodson chose February to honor the birthdays of former president Abraham
