Brain-based learning strategies facilitate collaboration, positive time management, and offer comfort and hands on experience in classrooms. As brain-based learning grows, more information and ideas will be prevalent, and it is important to be open to these changes to offer the best educational opportunities for all students. My goal as an educator is to offer the best possible teaching methods to allow students to learn most efficiently. With innovations
In elementary schools, grade levels one through third are usually recommended by teachers, most teachers hold a child back during this time because of the child’s poor reading skills. “Students who are retained in these grades show initial improvement in academics. However, this improvement disappears after two to three years, after which retained students do no better or even slightly worse than similarly achieving students who were promoted.” (Gelpi 2004). However, being held back in early elementary school does not have a major effect on the child’s self-esteem. “The cost of having a student repeat 3rd grade is several times greater than alternatives such as tutoring or small-group interventions, summer schools, or high-quality pre-k.” (Stipek
If the child has behavior problem, then they may be expelled for acting out or misbehaving, this affects their learning because they are not in class learning. The percentage of children living poverty that are affected by school achievement outcomes are 2-3 times greater than children not living in poverty. Emotional or behavior outcomes are measured by tantrums, outbursts and aggression, which persist beyond the normal age range expected. Poor children suffer from emotional and/or behavior outcomes more often than children living in non-poverty. Many of these effects are displayed at school and at home, occasionally in public places such as the mall, and cause lots of disturbances such as violence.
The survey found that 44% of students from ages 8-12 indicated they were feeling stressed because of managing school pressure, responsibilities, homework, and doing well in school. Kids health conducted a similar survey and hound students were worried about school, grades, homework, family, friends, peers, gossip, and teasing. One can argue that some stress is good and has been found to increase motivation and healthy competition. However, chronic stress, which occurs when one feels that he or she cannot possibly meet all of the demands placed upon him or her, has been consistently associated with negative outcomes (Blazer, 2010). The worry over the failure issue is further traced to educators who feel children just entering school are not fully prepared. Teachers are faced with kindergarten students who do not know their addresses, colors, and sometimes even first and last names (An ‘F’ 59). Another reason why the assignment of failing grades has decreased is the influence of the self-esteem movement, which promotes the assumption that children who do not have a positive self-image cannot learn or develop properly. Although this theory is widely accepted, it has been discredited by several studies. Recent research shows that, although American students felt more confident about themselves and their work, they were outperformed by several Asian countries on tests of elementary skills.
A traditional school may not offer the best education a child can possibly attain, consequently, parents chose to homeschool. Homeschooling allowed these great athletes, leaders, and artists to flourish into the great people they are known as to society. Some
A clicker system benefits school systems and students to help provide better education. Clickers are reliable, easy-to-use, cost effective, and accurate which make them a great tool to improve education all across the world. With a clicker response system, all students are able to indulge in class through a more active learning style. An active learning style allows students to stay attentive and not doze off during a lecture and miss important information. All in all, the use of clickers by students in school systems helps better provide a more active education that keeps students engaged.
Due to this fact, public education has been the go to education source for years. Though, this trend is slowly changing with many parents deciding to home school their children instead. Many factors are the cause for this issue, but the common arguments arise from a certain few. For students, public school provides many opportunities ranging from social connections, school sports, and the exposure to teachers who are experts in their fields. But homeschooling is often superior because it offers additional time for students to participate in various extracurricular activities and community service, allows for more individual attention, personal character development, and it offers less exposure to discrimination that is received in the public school environment.
They also attain more knowledge on subjects that they have personal interest in. While focusing on personal interests, homeschoolers are being taught in a sound environment. Homeschooling is beneficial to children because they receive individual attention, they score higher on standardized tests, and they learn in a secure environment.
Class size reduction can help lead to an earlier identification of students with learning disabilities and behavioral problems. If the student teacher ratio is reduced from, say, 26:1 to around 13-17:1, there is more one on one time opened up between the student and the teacher, thus making it easier for the teacher to discover if any of his/her students have a learning disability. According to PSEA.org, smaller class sizes can lead to less vandalism, fewer suspensions and even fewer classroom distractions and disruptions from students. In most of the studies conducted, students showed better be... ... middle of paper ... ...who were in larger classes in elementary school. With a better learning experience and a will to strive higher, smaller classes in elementary school lead to better decisions in high school.
