Bell's Research Article Summary

Bell’s palsy is a type of facial paralysis that mimics the signs and symptoms of a stroke. The etiology of Bell’s palsy is still debated. “The widely accepted mechanism is inflammation of the facial nerve during its course through the bony labyrinthine part of facial canal, which leads to compression of the axons, and disruption of blood supply to the nerve itself (Lee, 2013)”. The databases that were searched were CINHAL and MEDLINE. Bell’s palsy and steroids were the key words that were used to search for the research articles. The research question to be answered is do men and women with Bell’s palsy who were treated with steroids compared to men and women with Bell’s palsy who were not treated with steroids have a decreased risk for complications? The two research articles that were found provide information to help to answer this question. The first article is strictly a follow up study. The researchers used a data base to compile all of their data. They did not do any experiments on any persons but merely looked through files to answer their question. The second article actually did a study and had to obtain informed consent form the patients. The researchers for the second article had an experimental and a control group. They are similar in a way that they both looked at how steroids can have a positive outcome for Bell’s palsy patients. Both articles answered their question and are have valuable information when using them to answer the research question of, do men and women with Bell’s palsy who were treated with steroids compared to men and women with Bell’s palsy who were not treated with steroids have a decreased risk for complications? Both articles helped answer this question and gave valuable information regarding steroids positive
