Recommended: Essay on writing styles

While doing an analysis of the essays regarding “The Beet Queen,” I noticed correlations between their writing an my own. Sample D started of with a question, used as a hook, which is something I can recall doing freshman year quite often. It also has a really good thesis statement, even though there is a comma missing. It would make a fine starter for an essay with a little bit of work. Sample H has more problems than Sample D, in my opinion. It uses the word “me” making the essay personal instead of analytical. It also is very generalized, there are no specific details brought in for the story. Onto Sample A, the introductory paragraph sounds choppy, like their thesis was broken into different sentences then switched around into a weird,

    In Myla Goldberg’s fiction novel, The Bee Season, young Eliza Naumann is a fifth-grader at McKinley Elementary School. In the novel, Goldberg incorporates several key concepts Martin Buber presents in his text, I and Thou. The story is set around Eliza as she competes in the school, district, and national spelling bees. Throughout the story, struggles as her family begins to separate and deteriorate. Buber in his text argues that there are two separate realms of I-You and I-It (Buber 82, 83). The I-It world is where Eliza experiences reality of the circumstances her family is experiencing. On the other hand, in the I-You world Eliza becomes in total commune and relation with God, or shefa as Eliza describes (Goldberg 190). Buber suggests every human has desire to be in I-You realm (Buber 79). However, this realm can become an I-It by individuals seeking the I-You— making it objectified and using it for a specific purpose (68). In Goldberg’s novel, Eliza begins seeking I-You, shefa, to remove herself from chaos and to help solve her problems of her broken family (Goldberg 172). Once she has obtained shefa, Eliza wants to be removed from the I-It world and “desires to have God continually in space and time” (Buber 161). Buber would suggest Eliza’s I-You relationship is lacking depth and that she is actually going further away from the I-You realm and into the I-It realm, as she objectifies her I-You. Goldberg helps the reader to have a better understanding of Buber’s key concepts, by allowing the reader to experience alongside Eliza as she encounters the I-You and I-It realms.

Tony and Nancy's essay were more similar both in their mantras/life lessons than Roald's. Roald's was more philosophical and poetic, he leaves some of what he says up to your own interpretation. Overall however the essays are fairly similar in how they are written as well as the questions they answer. I would explain to someone outside the class that to write a "This I Believe" essay they need to look back at the culmination of their life and see what they hold to be a universal truth that has helped them of guided them through life. I would tell them to look at the struggles in their lives and assess what philosophy has always got them through in the end, an altruistic. Lastly I would tell them to think of what wisdom they wish that they could share with their children, or the world at large to make it more happy and well adjusted
