Everybody has to go grow up one day. There is no going around it one day you will be an adult. It is on this journey to adulthood that most kids are asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. This is the beginning for each individual to figure out what occupation they want to have after high school. There are millions of different occupations out there in the world, and each occupation has a different set of requirements that come along with it. One of these occupations is mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering like every other job has different characteristics about it that make it unique. You can also get a masters, Phd, or doctorate in mechanical engineering (M.E.). On average it takes college students 5 years to get a bachelor’s in mechanical engineer. This is mainly due to the fact that most students take a semester off to work as an intern for a local company. This has many benefits including good job experience and good references for a resume (Becoming a Mechanical Engineer). Many mechanical engineers also join clubs in college that compete in engineering competitions. For example the “concrete canoe challenge” is a competition where students from colleges all over the nation design a canoe and build it using concrete. They then race their designs (Scully). After obtaining their desired degree in mechanical engineering or any engineering discipline the student must also pass two exams to be licensed practicing engineers. The first exam normal which is usually taken right after college is called the, “Fundamentals of Engineering Exam”, or “F.E. Exam”. After passing the F.E. Exam usually an engineer would work for 4 years then take the, “Principles and Practice of Engineering exam”, or “P.E. Exam”. Both of these test are required by most states to show you are a competent engineer and that companies should be able to hire you without having to worry about incompetence. After passing both exams you are considered to be a practicing engineer and are fully licensed to work anywhere in the country as one (M.E.).
