Everybody has to go grow up one day. There is no going around it one day you will be an adult. It is on this journey to adulthood that most kids are asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. This is the beginning for each individual to figure out what occupation they want to have after high school. There are millions of different occupations out there in the world, and each occupation has a different set of requirements that come along with it. One of these occupations is mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering like every other job has different characteristics about it that make it unique. You can also get a masters, Phd, or doctorate in mechanical engineering (M.E.). On average it takes college students 5 years to get a bachelor’s in mechanical engineer. This is mainly due to the fact that most students take a semester off to work as an intern for a local company. This has many benefits including good job experience and good references for a resume (Becoming a Mechanical Engineer). Many mechanical engineers also join clubs in college that compete in engineering competitions. For example the “concrete canoe challenge” is a competition where students from colleges all over the nation design a canoe and build it using concrete. They then race their designs (Scully). After obtaining their desired degree in mechanical engineering or any engineering discipline the student must also pass two exams to be licensed practicing engineers. The first exam normal which is usually taken right after college is called the, “Fundamentals of Engineering Exam”, or “F.E. Exam”. After passing the F.E. Exam usually an engineer would work for 4 years then take the, “Principles and Practice of Engineering exam”, or “P.E. Exam”. Both of these test are required by most states to show you are a competent engineer and that companies should be able to hire you without having to worry about incompetence. After passing both exams you are considered to be a practicing engineer and are fully licensed to work anywhere in the country as one (M.E.). Anybody and everybody can become an industrial machinery mechanic; especially, those who are passionate about getting their hands plastered in motor oil, grease, and other mechanical lubricants. These people will more than likely be ecstatic about getting into industrial machinery mechanics. They need to be able to put in one hundred ten percent of their effort into becoming an industrial machinery mechanic. An industrial machinery mechanic’s overall objective on the job is to stop a mechanical error before it happens. An industrial machinery mechanics are often caught repairing, maintaining, and fabricating machinery. They will be required to have certain education and training as well as some on the job training or complete an apprenticeship program. They will receive many benefits for working in this particular field.
Mechanical engineers must be licensed of they are to do anything that affects peoples’ lives, property, or the environment. A bachelor’s degree is minimal for most companies. A master’s degree assures a better starting salary and opportunities for advancement. High school credits should have good grades in: math, physics, chemistry, biology, drafting, computer and mechanical courses. To become a mechanical engineer you should start at a high school level when you notice curiosity of how, any why things work.
My interest in the field of Automobile goes back to my early years in high school which is when I decided to pursue a career in engineering. As a child I was always fascinated by the very concept of automobile. Further, my father’s constant involvement in the automotive industry as an insurance claims assessor further enhanced my interests in automobiles. He was the one responsible for showing me the correct path to pursue my career in automobile field. Hence, after having completed my primary education, I decided to delve straight into the world of mechanics and engineering and pursued a diploma in mechanical engineering followed by a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Since there were very few options in India & there was no direct path to get into automobile field.

Ever since I was little I have always been interested in how things work, and I have always thought about how I could build them work better. As an example, I lived in Japan for two years while I was in first and second grade. I went to a small public school and loved to ski with my friends, we probably went skiing at least once a week during the winter. When I was skiing I would always be fascinated by the ski lifts and spend a good deal of time staring at them to try and figure out how they worked. And eventually I did. That is just one example of my everyday life. I want to have a career in what I already love doing -- learning how machines work and making my own. The first time I went to Maker Faire in Kansas City was the day I decided for sure that I wanted to be a maker, and I haven’t missed a Maker Faire since. Maker Faire is an annual event that lasts a weekend and is held in various different cities around the world. It is a place for makers to show off their inventions and projects to thousands of spectators.

When I am presented with a challenge or a problem, I would first tackle it with the first few ideas that I come up with. If those ideas do not solve the problem, then I would take a few minutes to myself and think. I would ask my friends on their opinions and ideas to add to my thought process. After all that, I would approach the problem again and see if it can be solved. A mechanical engineer’s job is to solve problems and think. I love to solve problems and think. Solving issues have always been a strength of mine. Mechanical engineers want to find the solution to a problem as quickly as possible so it can be resolved. If their first method does not work, they think of another and hope that works. By thinking and solving issues practically on a daily basis, mechanical engineering matches my persona and will enhance by skills. Another one of my strengths is working with computers. Computers are a necessity in this field. If a new software comes out, I would play around with the software to be fully accustomed to it. My creativity has allowed my love for building things to expand. Ever since I was young, I always love to build things with Legos.
