I am currently in the academy for the Department of Corrections to become a correction officer while I am the process for being in the New York Police Department. But let me tell you how I got to this point of applying for the prestigious program at John Jay College. I have dyslexia. Because of this learning disability, I was told that I was not going to make it. People told me that maybe criminal justice was not for me because I was not performing well in remedial math. There are seven different types of correctional job assignments based on the location in the facility, job description, and the type of contact with inmates (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015). These correctional assignments are block officers, work detail supervisors, industrial shop and school officers, yard officers, administrative officers, perimeter security officers, and relief officers (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015).

The criminal justice system is made up of multiple different moving parts working together to catch, control and rehabilitate criminal offenders. In the prison system there are three different sections that make up the operations, the Security Personnel, Treatment and Program staff, and the Service Staff. (Seiter p.376) First I want to start with one of the most misjudged job which are those of the correctional officers. They are the personnel who are the “staff person in a prison or jail who accomplishes the institution’s mission by maintaining control and order within the prison”. (Seiter p.365) They are housed with hundreds of inmates a day without any weapons to defend themselves and are look to keep compliance of the same offenders that committed violent crimes within the community. The average career correctional officer will spend a minimum of approximately 6 years incarcerated with inmates. (Seiter p.358) Within this time frame correctional officers have to maintain a high level of communicational skills to effectively communicate with their assigned inmates and show they are unbiased to everyone. FBLA has been such a defining point in my high school career and vital part in who I am today and even who I will be in the future. Becoming an officer would allow me to see to that other students that are new to FBLA also experience the same things as I have so that they could not only grow within FBLA but also in life. I hope to, as part of becoming a potential officer, that I can encourage others in FBLA as was done to me by older peers. Hopefully with this, we can have a large increase in membership and activity to improve our chapter.
The Criminal Justice System is composed of several different fields that include institutions, practices, and systems in which the government mitigates and serves the community by providing safety and security by controlling crimes. As a Deputy Probation Officer in the Criminal Justice System one will be supervising probationers who have been convicted of crimes and sentenced to probation. A Deputy Probation Officer's role requires a great level of compassion, patience, and energy, all while teaching responsibility for necessary life skills. These life skills include communicating, self-control, critical thinking, and problem solving. One must be able to communicate effectively, challenge, and motivate the probationer by teaching a positive way of conduct and how to make better choices in life. The Officer is also responsible providing the offender with the necessary tools for job training, coordinating rehabilitation services, substance abuse counseling, mental health, and other life coping skills.
The “Tough on Crime” and “War on Drugs” policies of the 1970s – 1980s have caused an over populated prison system where incarceration is policy and assistance for prevention was placed on the back burner. As of 2005, a little fewer than 2,000 prisoners are being released every day. These individuals have not gone through treatment or been properly assisted in reentering society. This has caused individuals to reenter the prison system after only a year of being release and this problem will not go away, but will get worst if current thinking does not change. This change must be bigger than putting in place some under funded programs that do not provide support. As the current cost of incarceration is around $30,000 a year per inmate, change to the system/procedure must prevent recidivism and the current problem of over-crowed prisons.
Ted Conover was from a relatively high class upbringing with good professional accomplishments and education. He was a journalist who came up with an idea to become a correction officer because he was denied access by the Department of Corrections from conducting interviews or research on intuitional grounds about the lives of correctional officers.
Correctional Officers around the nation is face with a lot of reasonability on a daily basis. Correctional Officers are reasonable for all law enforcement duties within the jail and prison system which is county, state and federal. According to the Bureau of labor statistics there are 469,500 correction officers around the nations working rotating shifts which can range from 8 to 10 hour shifts. The Bureaus also states correctional officer position can be dangerous and stressful. Every year many correction officers has encounter a serous confrontation with inmates, the officer is exposed to contagious diseases.
A day in the life of a correctional officer is often easily overlooked. Not realizing or knowing the specifics that go into what it takes to interact daily with incarcerated inmates is one reason people are able to go about their lives, not wondering or thinking about how those inmates are managed. I had the pleasure of interviewing a man named Steve from my church who worked in corrections for sixteen months starting in 2008. At that time, Steve said it was not required to attend the correctional officer academy, but it has since become a requirement to pass the academy. Having individuals that are professional is a key element to maintaining and establishing prisons that will house humans. Without an inspiring leader there is intelligent and competent there is very little hope for a chance for decent prisons. Leadership is sometimes developed, and some are born with the traits to become leaders. The literature on correctional leadership is limited, leadership and those that qualify to become leaders of a correctional institution should always be motivated. Although I have no knowledge firsthand about corrections and have never worked in a correctional setting my information of what it takes to be a correctional leader is limited. Close attention must be paid to the well-being of the staff and inmates. This study will add to the continued wealth of knowledge on the topic of professional attitudes in a correctional institution by examining job stress, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. The attitudes will have a considerable effect on the intentions and behaviors of the staff designed to maintain a safe environment for the inmates. Job stress is related to stressors in the workplace which have adverse effects on the team. Stress in the workplace has been linked to illnesses and a shorter life expectancy. It has also been associated with divorce, substance abuse, and suicide among correctional officers. Job satisfaction comes from when the employees receive fulfillment from their needs being met at work. Initially, job satisfaction is related to compliance with the organization rules. Lastly, the organizational commitment is the relationship between the employee and their organization(Lambert & Paoline, 2008). There two major perspectives of organizational commitment calculative and attitudinal. When the employee is committed to the organization because of some sort cost or benefits, which determines their level of commitment to the team. The second view attitudinal commitment is the strength of an individual's feelings towards and views of the group believes in its goals. Becoming a Police Officer has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. Growing up I remember always wanting to see what was going on when lights and sirens raced past my house. As I grew up I realized how strong my desire to help others and be able to do something my family and I could be proud of. My desire from a very young age, to become a Police Officer, has helped shape me to the person I am now.
It has always been my dream to become an officer in the military ever since I was young. My uncle was in the military and loved it, he always told me stories about it and how much he enjoyed it. Growing up hearing his stories and seeing his uniform made me want to do it one day. Well, for me that one day is here now and I am proud to put on that uniform and call myself a soldier. I have always been a leader in my family, my community, and in my life in general. I like to not just be in charge but, I like to inspire those around me. I enjoy setting the example for those around me to follow.
