In today’s timed essay I will be going over Emily Dickson’s “Because I could not stop for Death”. It's a pretty interesting poem but it’s kind of difficult to understand at first read. It contains a lot of old language and the theme is kind of danced around for most of the poem. But that does not mean we can’t figure out the meaning behind it. In this essay we will be looking at How Dickinson characterizes the experience of death, and What detail in the poem and/or literary techniques help to reveal her attitude towards death? The narrator does not seem to look poorly on death. She seems to look at death in a mostly pleasant light. Let's go through bit by bit and pick out what tells us he feelings towards death. First, “He kindly stopped for me” He didn’t throw me in, he didn’t yell to hurry up. She says that death kindly stopped for her. We also pick up on a nicer tone because of the rhythm of the poem being a softer spoken and slower beat. “We slowly drove – He knew no haste” Again he slowly starts heading off, it’s not like when you hit the gass pedal too hard and everyone sinks back into their seats, He took his time. Though I guess he was in no rush. “His Civility” Death’s civility. Death is a real gentlemen her. It almost kind of gets into the flirting area with her kind of taking a liking towards death. Though with how he is acting, I don’t blame her. Then it talks about the school and what not that I really hit last paragraph, but then it really kind of turns a little. “The Dews drew quivering and chill” Now she’s getting kind of cold. It’s not as comfortable for her as it once was. It doesn’t seem she got ready that day with going out with death in mind. “We paused before a House that seemed A Swelling of the Ground” Now they stop in a less then ideal place to stay.
