The Battle of Long Island was in the Southwest of Long Island,New York. It happened early in the Revolutionary War on Tuesday August 27, 1776. (“American Revolution”). The weather was 78-82 degrees fahrenheit, it was rainy/foggy, high wind.(“ The Battle of Long Island Brooklyn Heights”). The two colonies that was in the war was Great Britain, and The US Colonies. George Washington took control of the revolutionary army on 2 July 1775. He took over at outside of Boston, before this his experience was limited to wilderness travel and soldiering. His soldiering experiences had been mainly for his home state of Virginia. The first battle that was of significance in this book was the Battle of Long Island. At this battle Washington and the rebel army are soundly defeated by General Sir William Howe and the British army. After this battle was fought Howe did not follow-up the victory with quick action as the Americans retreated. It could be said that if Howe and the British would continued the attack this rebellion could have been put down right away. This will not be the first time that Howe fails to do this, and it will lead to him being replaced later in the war Sir Henry Clinton. Have you ever heard of the Revolutionary war? Well you probably have but, you might not of known that it was not one big war. Actually, it was separated into small battles one of those battles is the battle of Trenton 1776 which is actually the battle I will be informing you about. This battle has some causes, leaders, events and some effects.
One would ruminate that 1100 men equipped with 30 pieces of artillery defending an un-finished fort would be no match for three thousand men and nine war ships armed with 270 cannons. Contrarily, on 28 June 1776 during the Revolutionary War, the American Forces proved a decisive victory against the British, and the signing of the Declaration of Independence was days later. The Patriots, under the leadership of Colonel William Moultrie, made a fort of the indigenous Sabal (cabbage) Palmetto Palm tree and took advantage of the British’s poor planning and lack of integration for a decisive American victory. Due to this battle, the Palmetto Palm tree was added to South Carolina’s state flag in 1861, and to this day, 28 June 1776 is termed South Carolina’s Independence Day. The Battle of Long Island took place in New York and caused the Americans to suffer a huge loss and end up retreating. Great Britain did more than double the damage to America than America did to them. William Howe, the British general, led the Loyalists in this battle and caused the Patriots to flee from New York and lose their spying fort. Despite their efforts, America lost this battle, but did indeed end up winning the war.
Some of the causes from the civil war were that the North was more experienced than the South, they also had more resources to fight in battle. American colonists were slowly getting more and more fed up with the inequality and taxation under British rule so they took a stand.
