Recommended: Understanding the Texas Revolution

The Battle of Gonzales was the first official battle of the Texas Revolution. (The Battle of Velasco doesn’t count because there were no casualties.) It took place on the second of October near the settlement of Gonzales in 1835. Lieutenant Castaneda told Texas Commander John Moore that he did not want to engage any more fighting and only want to take the cannon. When he did not stop the fighting, Castaneda withdrew to Bexar. The reason this battle is not a skirmish is because a skirmish has no real “winner” and only has an unclear result. A battle, on the other hand, has a defined ending with a defeat, surrender, or retreat(like in this one) by a side. Besides, they also set up a temporary state government and a Texan army, who under Sam Houston won several minor battles in the fall of 1835. In mid-February 1836, to avenge for the reputation of Mexico, Santa Anna decided to retake Texas. Mexican General Urrea led his troops and defeated all the Texans on the Goliad campaign up the Texas coast. On April 21st, the battle of San Jacinto started, which was also the sign of the end of the Texas Revolution.     The earliest start to the Mexican Revolution of 1910 happened one hundred years earlier when two priests, Miguel Hidalgo and Jose Morelos, led a stand against the Spanish colonial officials who were controlling Mexico at the time. While Hidalgo was marching into Mexico City, Jose Morelos organized an attack force and began raiding Spanish plantations and towns. Hidalgo’s army was defeated in 1811 and he was executed. Jose Morelos took control of the revolution and led attacks until the Spaniards captured and killed him in 1815.
