Some of these few things are that you should stand up for what you believe, you should respect everyone you meet when and where you meet them, and you should try to avoid fighting anyone as much as possible. Dolores Stewart Riccio is an American author that writes cookbooks, poems, and novels in the mystery and thriller genres. Born in Boston and brought in New England most of the settings of her Circle of Five series of noels are set in Pembroke, Massachusetts where she grew up. She was married to Ottone Riccio an author, teacher, and poet best known for the Intimate Art of Writing Poetry. From that first marriage she had two children son, Charles Sundance Anderson and daughter Lucy-Marie Sanel both of whom deem themselves among the Penobscots of Maine. Dolores is Scotch-Irish though she held a traditional Penobscot funeral on Indian Island on Old Town, Maine for her son when she died in 2007. For her cookbooks, she has always preferred to use her married name Dolores Riccio as she credits her Native American husband who was insistent that she try many experimental dishes. Conversely, she uses her maiden name of Dolores Stewart when she is writing her poetry. Not one to abandon either of her heritage or past life she decided to use both of her names when she pivoted to the writing of fiction novels. She has recently moved back to Pinehills in Plymouth the small town that she had always adored growing up as a child in nearby Pembroke. Barbara Strozzi was one of the most talented figures of the seventeenth century. Strozzi was born in Venice in 1619 to Isabella Garzoni, servant to Giulio Strozzi. In 1628, Giulio Strozzi acknowledged Barbara as his natural daughter by referring to her in his will as his “figliuola elettiva”, meaning elective daughter and designating her as his heiress. Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” is an excellent example of an effective argument; it was written in response to an editorial addressing the issue of Negro demonstrations and segregation in Alabama at the time. He writes in a way that makes his argument approachable; he is not attacking his opposition, which consists of eight Alabama clergymen who wrote the editorial. This is illustrated in his opening sentence: “My dear Fellow Clergymen” (464). King was an activist for civil rights during this time, and came to Alabama to help out his fellow brothers that were facing opposition. He was concerned with the monologue rather than dialogue that was going on during this time in Alabama; where each side would talk about the problem but never get together to negotiate and seek a solution. The clergymen’s editorial along with the unjust circumstances for Negroes at the time in Alabama was King’s driving force in writing this letter from his jail cell, and created an outline of a strong argument for many years to come.
Lucy Stone made it clear that she was going to be very different than most women of her time. She went to Oberlin College in Ohio, the only college accepting blacks and women at that time. While at Oberlin she started her lifelong career of fighting for blacks and women. It started when she worked at the college as a student teacher. Henry David Thoreau’s work on civil disobedience in 1849 paved way for Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. His work stated that if you don’t like what is being done then don’t just say you want change be the change you want to see. In the case of Rosa Parks she didn’t find it right she had to sit in the back of the bus so she didn’t sit in the back. Then she was put into jail. ...s. In one way, King’s opponents were correct. It may not have been the right time for everyone in America to confront discrimination. It was, however, time for an Innovator to stand strong against the injustices perpetrated against blacks in our country and to use his skills as a persuasive writer and orator to bring the awareness of the cause of civil rights to the attention of the American people. King once said, “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.” The time was right for King, motivated by his desire for change, to step forward as an Innovator in the cause of civil rights. It was his willingness to fight and risk at the forefront of the civil rights movement that allowed for the changes in the laws and hearts of the people that were to come.
The lessons that are taught through experience are usually the ones that stick with children for a lifetime. In Toni Cade Bambara's “The Lesson”, Miss Moore, a prominent character in the story, teaches a lesson to underprivileged children growing up in Harlem. Bambara's work is described as “stories [that] portray women who struggle with issues and learn from them.” (Vertreace, Par. 48) Bambara uses Miss Moore and her characteristics to teach Sylvia and the other children about social inequality and the idea of pursuing personal aspirations regardless of social status. Miss Moore has many admirable characteristics; she's intelligent, patient and caring.
Martin Luther King, Jr. is known to be a civil rights activist, humanitarian, a father, and a clergyman. He is well known for fighting for the equal rights of colored people and ending discrimination. King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail is an important part of history that showed King’s opinion of a letter that he happened to read in the newspaper written by a group of clergyman. In this letter, the group of clergyman report that colored people, also known as black people, are being violent towards Birmingham City. Also, the clergymen believed the time that will allow segregation to be diminished was not happening anytime soon because it is not convenient. King refuted the clergymen’s argument in a variety of ways using tactics of argumentation and persuasion like appeal to emotion through real life examples, appeal to logic, and even articulating certain phrases through metaphors and word choice. Many of these different tactics of argumentation and persuasion made his letter very effective and is now seen as a great piece that is looked upon highly today.

During the course of King's writing, one of his strong points is his ability to take the words of his oppressors, discredit them or explain why their ideas aren't plausible, convey his ideas, and detail exactly why and how they will work. In the sixth paragraph, King rebukes those who "deplore the demonstrations that are currently taking place in Birmingham," as they are only dealing with the effect and not recognizing the cause for the demonstrations, then clarifies that the white power left the Negro community no other choice. In the next paragraph, King spells out the four basic steps of any non-violent demonstration. Breaking it down even more, he gives an example of each step in the Birmingham situation. King gave the reader an easy to follow step by step account of a non-violent protest that let the reader understand the careful planning of each step.
Dr. King effectively expresses why his critics are wrong in a passionate tone. He is extremely zealous about the rights that African-Americans have been neglected to have and should have, as well as everyone else. Mr. King was criticized for his “untimely” actions in Birmingham. “This wait has almost always meant ‘never.’” (King 264) Martin Luther King isn’t just a bystander witnessing the injustice; he is a victim and one of the few who is willing to fight for justice well deserved. His tone also evokes similar passion in the audience. The reader will feel that strong passion and by doing so they will realize that Dr. King does know what he is doing. Since Dr. King is directly affected and is relatable, his writing is able to effortlessly capture his determination and courage. All while having a passionate tone he is able to remain a respectable and calm tone throughout his letter. Dr. King’s tone shifts from brusque to a conciliatory manner. His non-aggressive tone benefits Dr. King’s argument and makes it more effective. If Dr. King had written in an hostile tone, the clergymen would feel attacked and would not want to support his cause....
“Treat others as you would want to be treated.” This is a well-known quote that many people use around the world. This quote basically means that if someone doesn’t like to be treated in a poor way, then they shouldn’t treat another person in a poor way either. African Americans had a difficult time dealing with unfair treatment back in the days. They would frequently be looked down upon just because they had different colored skin. Many African Americans grew tired of the way they were treated. Some of them stood up for what they believed in. Whether it was in a form of a March, speech, or protest, they would not back down for their equal rights. One of the most widely known incidents that took place during the Civil Rights Movement was known as the “Greensboro Sit- In”. The Greensboro Sit- In had a very powerful effect on the Civil Rights Movement.
