Soda is one of the most common drinks worldwide. Although soda is delicious it is also very bad for you. Michael Bloomberg the Governor of New York has placed a ban on sodas over the size of 16 ounces. The defects soda has on your body are dental problems, obesity, and diabetes. One of the main problems that soda brings to the human body is dental issues. The article,“ Battle lines drawn over soda tax,” by Associated Press , the Press explains how there is an ongoing “national fight about taxing sugary drinks.” According to Associated Press, “ Health experts say the beverages contribute to health issues such as diabetes, obesity, and tooth decay.” This quote demonstrates that sugary drinks can lead to health issues. Since sugary drinks leads to health issues, people are considering soda tax. This is because thirteen percent of adult minorities are diagnosed with diseases such as diabetes.
The New York Soda Ban is a step in the wrong direction and efforts should be put towards making life better, rather than focusing on a movement that will have little to no effect. Realize that I am not stating the soda should be drank, because even I know that soda is harmful towards the body and is one of the leading causes of obesity. In the past couple years people all around the nation, whether it's in New York City or an 8th Grade classroom in Michigan, people have been pressed with the question, whether the New York Soda Ban, is a good thing, improving health, or if there is a larger issue. Is this decision showing evidence of the Government interfering with our basic civil liberties?
There are plenty of sugary soft drinks in the market today. Sugary soft drinks are included as drinks defined by the US Department of Agriculture and the US Department of Health and Human Services in their Dietary Guidelines for Americans as “sugar-sweetened beverages” that contain different types of sugars that contribute calories. Examples of these are lemonade, sports drinks, energy drinks, carbonated sodas and sweetened teas and coffees (Marrow,2011).
The obesity epidemic is one of the most pressing issues at this point in both American society and U.S. public policy initiatives. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention 35.9% of U.S. adults over the age of twenty are obese (CDC, 2013). The CDC further notes that 69.2% of U.S. adults twenty years of age and over are overweight (this percentage includes those who are obese). The obesity problem is not exclusive to the adults in the U.S. The CDC notes that 18.4% of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 are currently obese (CDC, 2013). These statistics illustrate the severity of the obesity epidemic in this country, but what can be done to address or even correct this problem? Many people have proposed solutions, but few are as radical as the proposal from Michael Bloomberg (the New York City Mayor) in 2012.
Kris Gunnars of Authority Nutrition explains that “there are no proteins, essential fats, vitamins, or minerals in sugar…just pure energy.” This is why people call them “empty calories.” Added sugars can also cause tooth decay. Kris Gunnars says “it provides easily digestible energy for the bad bacteria in the mouth.” Our teeth begin to break down, rot, lose strength, and turn yellow. According the American Dental Association, when the normal bacteria inside your mouth come into contact with sugar, it produces acid that destroys enamel and results in tooth decay. People always hear dentists nagging them to limit their consumption of soda, cookies, donuts, and other sugar-filled snacks, but they really are of over exaggerating, added sugars really do have a history of causing tooth decay. Added sugars are also known to cause vitamin and mineral depletion. Added sugars use up our body’s stored B vitamins, calcium, and magnesium for digestion, while natural sugars are present in food that already contain these needed nutrients. By consuming these added sugars, these vitamins deplete and our nervous system suffers. According to Ann Marina of Livestrong, vitamin and mineral depletion may cause “… fatigue, depression, anxiety and lack of energy. Lack of calcium and magnesium may contribute to arthritis and osteoporosis.” Since added sugars are addictive, it may be hard to avoid tooth decay and vitamin and mineral depletion
Obesity can cause many illnesses, including diabetes, which is very common. As the debate over whether the soda tax should take effect arises, critics say that the tax will help those with obesity-related illnesses. What about exercising and maintaining a healthy lifestyle? These two factors cannot be forgotten, knowing they are the most important. Americans have consumed 12 percent of soda and become less active since 1970.
Based on the information and data collected through research the statement that soda has no nutritional benefits for the human body and causes harm, opposed to stating that soda has no negative effects to the body can be made. Soda is often a big part of a human’s diet. Therefore, the harmful effects of soda are occurring without people knowing soda is to blame and not having the knowledge of the illnesses that are linked to it.
This article is talking about a mayor banning beverages larger than 16 oz. at restaurants, sports arenas and movie theaters. The reason this mayor wants to ban large sodas is because he is afraid for all of New York’s health. That’s a good thing because a lot of us don’t know what we drink and eat most of the time. We just eat our food we don’t even bother to look what’s really in side such as calories, fats and oils in our food. This Mayor is doing New York a huge favor by banning large sodas. He’s helping everyone in New York about their health but people of New York doesn’t see that. There are people who are trying to not let him pass this law because some of them probably drink 16 oz. every day of once a week or twice a week or even more.
