Many people in today’s society use drugs and alcohol to get away from their problems or to just feel good. Growing up, I’ve heard of many stories that involve death from overdose of drugs or alcohol. Most of the time, this leads to serious problems for people in life and causes them to have a bad reputation. My parents and teachers have taught me that in order for me to be successful in the future, I should always be aware of the consequences to bad things. For example, if you are seen under the influence of drugs or alcohol and one of your friends post a picture or video of you on the internet, it could completely ruin your future. When people tell you that whatever you post on the internet stays there forever, they really mean it. This

CBS news reported that more than 30 percent of American adults have abused alcohol or suffered from alcoholism at some point in their lives. This is a staggering number which is widely overlooked because alcohol is legal. Those who suffer feel helpless and trapped by their addiction being unable to stop and quit on their own. The consequences that follow the use of any drug are unfavorable. Although many individuals may see drug addiction as a mere lifestyle choice, it is a problem that many individuals suffer from and inevitably a growing issue that leaves major social and economic impacts.
A successful person will always promote the taking of risks because a lot of times the best things in life happen when we feel scared and vulnerable. When risks are involved there is a great probability of failure. Failure is not necessarily a bad thing. Failures serve as learning experiences. Experiences where you can dissect what worked and what didn't work. But Gawande explains how, "the only failure is the failure to rescue something." He explains how risks are essential, but at the same time risks must be taken with a careful eye. The careful eye being that one must be able to distinguish when something has gone array and being able to control the situation. If you take a risk and things do not go as planned, this doesn't mean it’s a failure just yet. You must be able to adjust and attempt to rescue it. I took the risk of cheating. This does not mean it’s a failure just yet. I've become aware that things have not gone as planned. I have acknowledge that there is a problem. My job now is to change my current situation and attempt to rescue it. My situation should only be considered a failure, if and only if, I am unable to rescue and change my cheating
That being said, drugs and alcohol, can cause ones to lose their lifestyle and even their loved ones. Using and abusing drugs and alcohol can also lead to addiction. This creates a whole different empire in one’s life. Some may even steal, lie and cheat, just to obtain their ability to get there next fix. As a society we tend to categorize the severity of addiction in a way that drugs are the most dangerous and alcohol being just a problem. Because alcohol addiction can be a slow progressive disease many people don’t see it in the same light as drug addiction. An addiction to drugs is seen as being a more deadly and dangerous issue then that of alcohol because a drug addiction can happen more quickly and can kill more quickly. Alcohol is something that is easy to obtain, something that is found at almost every restaurant. People with an alcohol addiction can not hide from alcohol as easy as a drug addict. Approximately 7 million Americans suffer from alcohol abuse and another 7 million suffer from alcoholism. (Haisong 6) The dangers of alcohol affect everyone from children with alcoholic parents, to teenagers who abuse alcohol, then to citizens who are terrorized by drunk drivers.

There are roughly 80,000 deaths that are related to alcohol abuse every year, making it the 3rd highest cause of death in the United States. Every day more and more people are losing their lives to alcohol related illnesses and incidents. Alcohol is in fact a drug that has little to none health benefits. This topic is easy for me to write about because I believe that alcohol should be illegalized. Although it would be a long hard road to make alcohol illegal I think the benefits would outweigh the consequences. If alcohol was made illegal there would be less fatalities in the United States.

It is not only a personal problem that dramatically affects individuals' lives, but is a major social problem that affects society as whole. "Drug and alcohol abuse", these phrases we hear daily on the radio, television or in discussions of social problem. But what do they mean or what do we think and understand by it? Most of us don't really view drug or alcohol use as a problem, if that includes your grandmother taking two aspirins when she has a headache or your friends having few beers or drinks on Saturday night. What we really mean is that some drugs or alcohol are being used by some people or in some situations constitute problem with which our society must deal. Some subcultures even in United States that accept the use of illegal drugs may distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable situation, some college age groups might accept marijuana smoking at a party on weekends, but not just before going to a calculus class.
