Imagine a young girl approaching a store in the mall, walking in feeling completely out of place, she’s only there because the girls in her class have been talking about it. She finds that she actually likes the store and goes to try on a dress, as she looks at herself in the mirror she compares what she looks like to the poster of the model wearing the exact same dress. She realizes that she’s not as thin as the model, and the more she looks the more flaws she finds within herself: she’s not as tall nor as beautiful, her smile doesn’t radiate the same way. Because of her own self criticism she leaves the store with nothing in hand and with the thought that she’s not good enough. The unrealistic ideals set by the fashions industry make people feel uncomfortable in their own bodies and will go to scary extremes so they can be comfortable in their body. Many times they falsely believe that they are comfortable, even though their bodies are barely strong enough to fight their minds.“Big businesses uses mass media to destroy consumers’ health by creating harmful desires”(Schwarz). The pressure coming from the fashion industry makes people feel bad about themselves and who they truly are. “The promotion of the thin ideal in our culture has created a situation where the majority of girls and women don’t like their bodies”(Hellmich), people will judge themselves harshly, and criticize their own bodies and who they are because they are not like the tiny percentage of people in the world who are models. Girls will constantly believe that they aren’t thin enough to be accepted by society. If the fashion industry can promote to consumers that they are perfect just the way they are, and can disregard the standards set by the industry; then they can encourage personal growth in a person and allow for an increasing growth of confidence. Over time though the “fashion industry has now employed people of different body types and ethnic groups”(Bratskeir), and have shown people all over the world that the fashion industry is at last adapting to new people and are working towards a more diverse community. This new eye-opening concept makes people of the minority feel accepted and make them realize that they aren’t that much different because there are people in the world to represent
