The Station was a single story wood frame building of approximately 4500 square feet.. It was originally built in 1946 as a club for local military personnel who were on leave. Over the years it served as a variety of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. In 1972, a fire damaged the building and reopened in 1974. In 1991 it was converted into its final incarnation as a bar and showroom. The building was arranged with the bar, kitchen, dart room along with offices and storage on the east end of the building. The showroom and sunroom area comprised the west. There were four exits. The front door was only accessible through a corridor partially occluded by a small ticket booth and another 36 inch wide doorway in the middle of the corridor. This becomes a critical chokepoint when the fire breaks out.
May not be the most welcoming of banners, and yet if you are a wash customer you are one of the privileged and included. This wonderful space of washing, drying, tanning and car cleaning has to be the one and only Busy Bubbles. A small building just north of NDSU, this is an extraordinarily busy little corner of the world we call Fargo- Moorhead. Not only, can you wash your car and tan; this is a 24-hour laundromat that features: free drying! Doesn’t sound like much in the large scheme of things, and yet the numbers of people that visit this business in a week is staggering. And while the NDSU campus is very close, and the word “FREE” is connected to this establishment, it is not only college students that frequent this place of business. For an avid people watcher this place is a gold mine! Everyone needs clean clothes, and people of all kinds find their way to Busy Bubbles to complete this chore.
The OU Sooner Housing Center (SHC) is comprised of three housing facilities (The Jefferson House, The Jones House, and the Bud Wilkinson House) and a dining hall (The Wagner Dining Hall) which creates a family-like environment solely for residents. The Jefferson House houses all female residents, while the Jones House and Bud Wilkinson (referred to as “the Bud”) houses all males. The Wagner dining hall provides meals services only for students, faculty, and staff living in the three Sooner Housing Center. The first floor of the Bud is the “community center” which provides computers, a television, sitting areas, Ping-Pong and pool tables, a laundry room, and a main office. In the past, the Bud served only as athletic housing, but by 1996, the houses were converted to shared housing for both athlete (49%) and non-athlete (51%) “The change from all athletic housing to shared on-campus housing was originally mandated by the NCAA rules. As a result, the OU Athletics Department decided to take a creative approach and provide quality housing for all students” (Sooner Sports NP).
The enormous responsibility that an engineer has when designing a project is often overlooked. His or her job is not only to create a design that will work under ideal conditions, but that will meet the regulations of environmental and building codes and will also survive the unpredictable forces of nature that structures are sometimes subjected to. An article in the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce, "Structures are Held up by Both Skill and Luck,"1 describes many risks involved in the designing process and the failures that can occur when small details are overlooked. The Designing Station is a non-profit organization which provides furniture to homeless veterans, domestic violence victims, and hurricane survivors of Cumberland and Hoke County. Occupants that were in and out of this facility seemed to be in good character with no issues. Occupants were from different age ranges from young to the elderly and multiple ethnic groups.
