According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), fatalities involving a vehicle have reduced by 64% from 1994 to 2013[2]. Many of these accidents are avoidable and some occur in a variety of situations. These situations include times when a distracted driver collides with a vehicle in its blind spot while attempting to change lanes, or fails to notice a stopped vehicle ahead to properly apply the brakes in time. Through the aid of modern technology, more accidents can be avoided. Automotive Sixth Sense is a transformation of non-autonomous vehicles into autonomous vehicles. Automotive Aftermarket Automatic Accident Avoidance Apparatus (A6th) will help to reduce collisions. This aftermarket product accomplishes goals
The term autonomous refers to the capability of acting independently, or having the freedom to do so. A self-driving car is an autonomous car, which has the ability to sense its environment and navigating without any human operations. These types of cars are built to make safe and smart decisions on the road. In the past years, automobile companies have begun to introduce advanced driver assistance systems that are capable of parking, switching lanes, and braking in case of an emergency on their own, without the driver’s assistance. Automated vehicles are capable of maneuvering through street traffic, as well as other natural and man-made obstacles along the way. Therefore, this technology might completely change the methods of transportation.
Imagine that your car could detect hazardous roads before you could sense it? A feature that provides this type of protective driving exists within European cars. This valuable safety feature that is offered in European cars i...
GM is already producing the technology catering to the autonomous driving system in instalments as each new car produced, displays a prototype of a sophisticated “assisted driving” feature. Drivers of the Cadillac ATS sedan, a mid-sized car with a driver assistance, can now leave it to drive itself and maintain a safe distance in steady traffic. It can also measure a parking space and steer itself into it, read traffic signals, and warn the driver if he breaks the speed limit. Emergency brakes that overrule the driver’s actions in the case of an accident, add to special features that will be seen in automatic cars.
On March 25, 2017 at approximately 1622 hours, I responded to a reported REDDI vehicle parked at the Woodys Gas station, located at 174 Hwy 160, within Montezuma County, State of Colorado. The call reference the driver exiting the vehicle and walking into the gas station, when the male spoke with the station attendant she could smell alcohol on his breath. When he left the store, he stumbled to his vehicle nearing falling several times. Upon my arrival at the above stated address, I observed the vehicle parked near the gas pump. The truck was stationary and I observed the driver passed out and actively drooling onto his chest.
I was dispatched to a call of an erratically driven black Dodge pickup truck at the North Beach area doing donuts in the parking lot. As I was en-route my partner and I remembered a contact from the previous night, involving Joseph Grass. He too was driving a black Dodge truck exhibiting erratic behavior. As I turned on to Kuhn St., I observed a black Dodge truck sitting in the middle of the road, with its headlights on.
In 2010, the lives of a Macon family changed forever. A time of family togetherness that started out as a celebration turned out to be anything but, proving that a split-second action can have lasting consequences. The family had gathered in Longview, Texas to celebrate the eightieth birthday of Jerry Dingmore’s mother. As everyone prepared to head back from the party, Dingmore’s son, Colton, requested that he ride with his uncle Jay. Dingmore agreed, and everyone started to drive back to Jerry’s mother’s house-Jerry in one car and Colton, Jay, and Jay’s wife Betty in another. Out on the highway, Jay and Betty’s car was hit by a distracted driver who answered a text behind the wheel and swerved into their lane of traffic. Betty and Colton survived with minimal injuries, but Jay was killed on impact. Now, the Dingmores are trying to spread awareness on an issue that has affected many people and can be prevented simply by using common sense.
Movement is an everyday household word that we use instead of saying motion. Motion is a change of an objects placement in relation to the direction it went and time. Motion was explained by a now famous scientist who goes by the name of Issac Newton. He came up with the 3 laws of motion. The law that is being focused in is Newton’s first law, often called “Newton’s first law of inertia”. Newton’s first law is commonly stated as “An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted on by an outside force.” Put simply, an object that is moving will keep moving in the same direction and the same speed unless another force acts upon it and an object that isn’t moving won’t start moving unless there is another force that acts upon it. Inertia is the term that scientist use to describe the way that objects resist change in its motion. Inertia is directly related to an objects mass. The greater the mass of an object, the more inertia it has In other words, the heavier an object, the more resistant it...
Companies like Google, Tesla and Nissan, among others, have announced over the past few years that their companies are trying to develop self-driving or autonomous cars [Ref. 1 and 2]. Self-driving cars can provide many benefits to the average consumer. Studies have shown that because computers can react and process information many times faster than a human being, crashes on streets and roads can be decreased with quick and consistent evasion maneuvers by the autonomous car. They can also help maximize fuel economy by calculating the most direct and fastest routes. When the driving of an autonomous car demonstrates that the computer can safely and reliably transport the passengers to their destination, this frees up the passengers to do other things that they would not normally be able to do if they were driving the car manually. For this reason, self-driving cars can help maximize productivity of their passengers.

Technology is evolving faster than ever these days, however there is one technology that could revolutionize the transportation industry. This technology is called autonomous cars, also known as self-driving cars. Autonomous cars can be defined as a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment, and navigating without human input. Using different techniques such as GPS and radar, autonomous cars can detect surroundings, thus removing the human element in driving. This would have a positive effect in more ways than we could ever imagine. Research suggests that self-driving cars will become more abundant in the future because they will be more cost-effective, enhance safety, and decrease traffic congestion.
For all these features any car can still crash so this report aims to make you more aware of the safety aspects of modern cars and what role they play in driving.
In a 2010 WHO report on road accidents, the number of fatalities that occurred due to road accidents is 1.24 million worldwide. This means the current safety measures on vehicles are not enough. Much is being done in this area though. Computers are now being intensively being involved to counter any human error that causes accidents, apart from mechanical interventions in car designs. Utilizing radars and sensors, vehicles can now maintain safe distance from other vehicles (Adaptive cruise control). Antilock braking and air bags have been in use for quite some time. Driver Alertness Detection System (DADS) can sense driver’s alertness and prevent accidents due to sleepiness. Preventive systems that act upon the alcohol content in ones breath are also being tested. But probably the holy grail of preventive measures would be a self driving car. From pages of science fiction to reality, self driving cars are now being tested actively. Google has taken the lead I this technology and other major players like BMW, Mercedes, Audi etc. are also in the
In a world that is quickly becoming ever dependant on technology, people take many things for granted. For example: nearly every day you and I get into our cars to go to work, school, shopping, or anywhere else you can think of. Naturally, car manufacturers are constantly coming up with new technologies to get people to buy their car over the next manufacturers; and a lot of these new inventions seem straight out of a sci-fi movie, or book in this case.
Road safety is one of the most important aspects of daily living. Our vehicle is our main transportation from one place to another. The number of car and motorcycle accidents seem to be increasing because of the many distractions, the lack of safety measures and judgment to road conditions and weather. Not being cautious increases the chances of not only injuring ourselves but hurting others as well. On the road, you see people talking on their cell phones or texting, eating, putting makeup on, changing the radio station, reading or using your GPS while driving. These are all distractions that endanger drivers, passengers and bystanders safety. Safe driving involves off-road precautionary measures such as making sure tires are properly inflated, testing windshield wipers, getting regular oil changes and tune-ups and adjusting the mirrors. All of these actions can help prevent an accident. Unfortunately, not all of us decide to wear our seat belts when driving or turn signal ligh...
