Athletes are mostly known from the records they’ve broken, the points they score, and how many championships they’ve won. Today sports records are broken every year as athletes have new training techniques and improved technology. In the past athletes were asked to play the sport and focus on the game. They did not have to really worry about what was going on outside their sport. Recently we have seen athletes roles grow in society. Athletes’ personal lives are also more criticized and under the microscope of their fans. A criminal background or offense can ruin their career. One reason why we see such improvement in athletes is that most athletes specialize in a sport at a young age. Forty years ago most athletes would play multiple high school sports. Now most athletes focus on just one sport and some even elect to participate in that sport year round in the form of non school game programs.(Sports Specialization vs Diversification) Another reason we see a improvement in athletes is the improved training techniques by their coaches. Athletes and coaches both have more access to new techniques and drills. The internet allows coaches to talk to each other about ways to improve their coaching. They can also share ideas on how the athletes are being trained. Every year around Christmas Tennessee Titans receiver Andre Johnson takes kids from a local orphanage to Toys R Us letting them pick out whatever the wanted. Johnson has done this event since 2003 his rookie year each year costing him around fifteen thousand dollars. "It's fun," Johnson said. "It's fun for the kids and it's fun for me. It's something I enjoy seeing every year, so I figure why not keep doing it?" Johnson said when asked why he does it.(Andy Nesbitt) Another Athlete giving back is Russell Wilson who visits Seattle Children’s Hospital almost weekly. Wilson visits children every tuesday going room to room talking with kids and making them smile. One of the doctors at the hospital told reporters she sees the effects Wilson’s visits have on the patients and their families there, both in the anticipation before he arrives and the appreciation after he leaves. Serena Williams alo has made major contributions to charities winning award from Celebrity Role Model Award from the Avon Foundation for her work fighting breast cancer, and the “Young Heroes Award” for her support of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Williams also is an Ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund advocating for better education for children in the developing world.(Jasper
