In our society, many celebrities are selfish, but we do not take enough time to appreciate the ones that make great sacrifices in order to help the less fortunate. One person believed by many to be an inspiration on and off the baseball field is David Ortiz. David Ortiz should be given the title National Treasure because of his profound charity work and contributions to baseball. He has saved the lives of hundreds of children by giving them medical care they desperately need, and has revolutionized the role of the designated hitter in baseball.
David Americo Ortiz Arias was born on November 11, 1975, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (JockBio.com). He is the oldest child of Enrique Arias and Angela Rosa. (JockBio.com). In his early playing days, he was scouted by the Seattle Mariners and Minnesota Twins. He was recruited to play with the Boston Red Sox by his friend Pedro Martinez, and has never left Boston to this day (JockBio.com).
David Ortiz has saved the lives of hundreds of children by giving them medical care they would not otherwise have access to through his charity, the David Ortiz Children’s Fund. In February of 2005, he visited CEDIMAT hospital in the Dominican Republic, where he saw children suffering after they had heart surgery. He instantly donated two hundred thousand dollars to the hospital. Ortiz started his charity because he wants to give children everywhere the opportunity to live long, happy lives (DavidOrtiz.com). Roberto Clemente was originally born in a fairly large city in Puerto Rico. Clemente came from humble beginnings. His father was a foreman at a sugar cane plantation, while his mother did little odd jobs such as running the grocery store on the same sugar cane plantation. Clemente even worked on the plantation to help bring in money for his family of nine and to also buy a bicycle. While growing up, Clemente was focused on baseball and track. In many countries around the world, the socioeconomic problem is so bad that they are granted the title of a Third World country. Countries that are not quite as bad, such as most Latin American countries like Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, often have trouble, on a smaller level, of creating jobs and job security for its people to inspire work ethic and incentive to raise the socioeconomic bar that has been set below average. Sometimes, all it takes is a role model; a person who is from that respective country who has made a name for themself of continental proportion to inspire the rest of the country to fight against the low standard that has been acquired. This paper will discuss how in Latin America, the people of these countries have found hope and incentive to work through the hardship and hard work of certain professional baseball players that had either defected or were lucky enough to work their way into the American professional baseball system. Because these players have struck gold on such an enormous level, a global level, they have given the poorer and disadvantaged people of their country a reason to fight to make their situation better. These players have given back considerably to their communities and their countries which makes them the role models they are today.
