An endeavor for the well-being of children an baseball immortality
In our society, many celebrities are selfish, but we do not take enough time to appreciate the ones that make great sacrifices in order to help the less fortunate. One person believed by many to be an inspiration on and off the baseball field is David Ortiz. David Ortiz should be given the title National Treasure because of his profound charity work and contributions to baseball. He has saved the lives of hundreds of children by giving them medical care they desperately need, and has revolutionized the role of the designated hitter in baseball.
David Americo Ortiz Arias was born on November 11, 1975, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (JockBio.com). He is the oldest child of Enrique Arias and Angela Rosa. (JockBio.com). In his early playing days, he was scouted by the Seattle Mariners and Minnesota Twins. He was recruited to play with the Boston Red Sox by his friend Pedro Martinez, and has never left Boston to this day (JockBio.com).
David Ortiz has saved the lives of hundreds of children by giving them medical care they would not otherwise have access to through his charity, the David Ortiz Children’s Fund. In February of 2005, he visited CEDIMAT hospital in the Dominican Republic, where he saw children suffering after they had heart surgery. He instantly donated two hundred thousand dollars to the hospital. Ortiz started his charity because he wants to give children everywhere the opportunity to live long, happy lives (DavidOrtiz.com). David Ortiz is an icon because of his contributions to the welfare of children and to baseball. His charity raises money to give kids medical care that they need or don’t have access to, and it trains doctors and nurses. He has made significant contributions to baseball by changing the designated hitter’s role and donating equipment to children in need. If more wealthy people followed Ortiz’s humanitarian values, many of our current problems like poverty, racism and education imbalance would most likely not exist.
