The majority of those who read The Odyssey consider the protagonist of the story, Odysseus, a hero. On many occasions, however, Odysseus makes decisions beneficial to himself alone. For example, when Odysseus and his men find themselves on Polyphemus's island, Odysseus's actions are self-centered and at the expense of his men. This can be said for most of Odysseus's actions in the story, as his main objective is to reach his home. Having his men by his side when he returns seems a trivial thing to him. Odysseus could be considered a hero, but many of his actions say otherwise. Due to the many unfaithful and self-centered decisions he makes in the story, Odysseus is not a hero.
The question has been raised as to whether or not Odysseus, the hero of Homers The Odyssey, is an epic hero. An epic Hero portrays many classic properties, including being very strong and courageous. Odysseus is an epic hero, because he portrays many of these and other traits, such as having a goal that is foremost in his mind, and having descended into the underworld.
The great epic, Homer's Odyssey, is a tale of an adventure; a journey through the mind body and soul. Odysseus was strong throughout his voyage and was able to conquer his obstacles thanks to the help from the Goddess Athena. Athena provided physical and emotional support for this man, to get him on his way home to Ithaka. She also provided this same support for Odysseus' son, Telemakhos. Without her involvement, "The Odyssey" would not have turned out the way it did; because she plays such a crucial role in the story. It is understood that Odysseus is the primary character in this epic; concerning his fears and eventually returning to his home, Ithaka. The only reason this was possible is because he had the help of the clever and intelligent Goddess, Athena.
People are heroes in different ways for different reasons. American soldiers are heroes because they fight boldly for their country. Corrie Ten Boom is also a hero because she took risks and saved hundreds of Jews. Abraham Lincoln is another example of a hero because he fought for what he thought was right and helped free all slaves. Similarly, Odysseus, the main character in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, possesses all of these characteristics and many more, making him a true epic hero.
Odysseus demonstrates many heroic qualities throughout the Odyssey. In the section titled ‘The Cyclops’ Odysseus demonstrated focus and courage. He showed courage by facing the monster and he showed focus by not giving up when the fight got hard. Today, Bruce Jenner seems to share the heroic quality of courage because he had the courage to do a gender transition, becoming Caitlyn Jenner. Although some of the media may not approve or accept this action he had the courage to follow what he thought was right for him, becoming a girl, even though he knew some people would not approve. She put herself out there as did Odysseus when facing the Cyclops.
Heroes are eminent and cherished by the general public; they use their abilities to help others. Odysseus encounters many different obstacles throughout his journey. Polyphemus is Poseidon’s son, and a one eyed giant called a cyclops. Circe is the goddess of magic and witchcraft. The Sirens are half-women and half-bird creatures that lure sailors with their song. The lotus flower is a flower that makes the consumer forget all purpose and just want more lotus. In Homer’s, “The Odyssey,” Odysseus is a character portrayed as a hero through his bravery, wisdom, and loyalty.
The battered and wooden Trojan horse stood tall while the amber sky enclosed the large structure as the Trojan War had finally ended. The structured horse stood tall and proud once Odysseus’s crew had been renounced upon winning the war after 10 dreadful years of battle, as Odysseus was titled as a “hero” to his crew and to the people of Ithaca. Odysseus showed few heroic characteristics in the novel, however, the negative traits outweighed the good in his character. Odysseus is a villain in The Odyssey by Homer due to his excessive pride, disloyalty, and heartless acts and attitudes through the text. He retold many stories of his victories while glorifying his good deeds, and avoiding the elaboration on the mysterious and deformed aspect of his true character through his experiences on the sea, and in the palace. The waves created by the fury of Poseidon tracked Odysseus’s journey through 20 long years,
Do you think Odysseus is an epic hero? Odysseus was an epic hero because he would always defend his people. He also became an epic hero when he participated in the Trojan war. He was a Greek hero when he participated in the Trojan war. Odysseus was the son of Laertes.
I belive that Odysseus is not an epic hero and the following reasons expilans why.One reason that Odysseus is not an epic hero is because he is not loyal to his wife. In the Odyssey Odysseus sleeps with Calypso, a beautiful nymph. His gloating also has gotten him into some trouble. When he was gloating to polyphemus Odysseus shouted his name and that caused Odysseus and his crew to get cursed. One last reason why Odysseus is not an epic hero is because when he gets the bag of winds from Aeolus he did not tell his crew that that was going to bring them home.
A hero is a person with great strength or courage. Odysseus portrays a true hero in The Odyssey. He is the true hero of this epic because he has saved his men on many occasions using his cunning behavior and vast intellect. It shows he has the courage of a true hero.
In the first four books of Homer’s The Odyssey, the character of Telemachus undergoes a dramatic evolution. When Homer first introduces him, he appears to be an unsophisticated youth, wallowing in self-pity. After the goddess Athena intervenes, he becomes, seemingly, a man of courage, strength, and resolve. On closer analysis, however, one remains to wonder if this transformation is genuine. The rapidity of his change in personality and the assistance he requires from the goddess at every stage in his journey suggests that he is not yet a hero in the mold of his father, the great Odysseus.
Throughout the Odyssey, Telemakhos journeys to come to terms with the character that his lot in life necesitates. While he realizes who this identity is at an early stage, it is not until he gains the confidence largely through the support of Athena, and ultimately from his father, that Telemakhos is able to achieve self-discovery. The strength of his coming of age story heavily emphasizes the Odyssey as tale of identity.
Early on in both of their stories, Odysseus and Telemachus learn to practice strong will in initiating their own journeys. Even though Telemachus reaches the cusp of his childhood, the individuals around him plague him into believing he remains a boy. In the Odyssey, gods are considered to control vast things such as fate or choose to intrude in the lives of mortals. One of these goddesses, Athena, desires to aid both Odysseus and Telemachus in their journeys. In disguise, she gives Telemachus inspiration to initiate the steps to adulthood by saying, “you’ll never be fainthearted or a fool, /Telemachus, if you have your father’s spirit; /he finished what he cared to say,” (Homer 27). With this he commences the hardship of finding his father by immediately calling an assembly and defying the men around him who thought him incapable. Meanwhile, Odysseus has already faced trials testing his determination. He evades the many temptations of immortals su...
Picture this: a hero of great legends who travels to the underworld and back to get directions to his home from a blind prophet. It sounds like quite an impossible journey, but that is exactly what makes Odysseus all the more fascinating. The Odyssey, an epic poem orally transmitted by Homer, a Greek poet who wrote The Iliad, had to contain some variety of attributes that Greeks valued in a person. That one embodiment of what the Greeks found intriguing in a character is Odysseus. Odysseus is known as what is called an epic hero. The presence of God in our belief system is something that many cultures have taken for granted. In Odyssey book, this presence of God or Goddess is even tangible because in this epic, mortals have the abilities to talk them, to see them and to feel their presences around them. Since the beginning of the epic, Odysseus has always been helped by Athena (goddess) who is Zeus’ daughter and Zeus who admired the man’s faith, courage, strategy and intellect.
