In this essay, I will be defining atheism which is a non-religious philosophy. I chose this topic because even though Atheism is a rather simple concept to understand not many do and I wish to enlighten my peers. To completely understand atheism it is necessary to understand the differences between atheism and theism, atheism and agnosticism, and anti-theism and non-theism. Firstly to start off we will go over what is commonly considered to be the standard definition of atheism. This definition is that Atheism is a lack of belief in a god or gods. You can divide Atheism into two main groups anti-theism and non-theism. All atheists are non-theists because non-theism is the standard form of atheism which simply means to hold a disbelief in the a god or gods While Anti-theism is a conscious and deliberate opposition to theism. Anti-theists are directly opposed the concept theism. This does not mean they hold a hatred of theists but merely that they are in opposition to the destructive tendencies that they believe theism tends to provoke in its followers. Many people tend to be both anti-theistic and non-theistic at the same time because of this it's understandable if many people fail to realize that they aren't the same. It is important to know the difference between the two however because not every atheist is both anti-theistic and non-theistic. A much more concise way of putting this is that non-theism is standard atheism while anti-theism is a more radicalized version atheism that more directly opposes theism.
