Artificial Intelligence, are they an existential threat to us? Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the area of computer science focusing on creating machines that can engage on behaviors that humans consider intelligent. The ability to create intelligent machines has intrigued humans since ancient times and today with the advent of the computer and 50 years of research into AI programming techniques, the dream of smart machines is becoming a reality. These smart machines can mimic human’s thought, understand speech, and do other countless things that was not possible before. However, there seems to be a lot of disagreement and confusion around AI right now. The power of it might surpass human’s intellectual abilities and it is one of biggest existential …show more content…

The argument for a speed explosion was set out by the artificial intelligence researcher Ray Solomonoff in his 1985 article “The Time Scale of Artificial Intelligence”. It starts from a familiar observation of a computer that doubles its processing speed at regular intervals. Supposed that we have human-level artificial intelligence designing new processors. Then faster processing will lead to faster designers and an ever-faster design cycle, leading to a limit point soon afterwards. It is assumed that the recursive self-improvement of an AGI will occur very rapidly. As a computer, it 'll wield computer superpowers which are the ability to run 24/7 without pause, rapidly access vast databases, conduct complex experiments, perhaps even clone itself to swarm computational problems, and more (Barrat …show more content…

The current state of Artificial Intelligence allow systems to also learn from their own experience (Kurzweil 2011). For instance, Google’s autonomous cars (which has driven over 140,000 miles through California cities and towns) learned from their own driving experience as well as when Google cars driven by human. The technique of deep learning is related to this example, as large amount of data are stored inside the database of the system. Therefore the Artificial Intelligence could keep track of its data kept by the experience of itself. Basically, this technique is a mimic to how does human’s brain works (Jones 2014, p. 146). The only difference is, human’s ordinary brain is limited to some extent, while Artificial Intelligence system could manage to quickly keep and store data into its database and use it anytime without any recall problems. This is why Artificial Intelligence is one step ahead from
