Central Idea: My tree of life bracelet, my nursing identification badge, and my scars are three objects that help tell a bit about my life and me. Introduction: Throughout life, many people never come to the conclusion of who they are or what their purpose in life might be. I personally know this from experience. I never quite knew what type of personality I had or what “clique” I should belong to: the jocks, the preps, or just the quiet kids in the background. a. At fifteen, I was being young and reckless like most teenagers are when I got in an ATV accident. I had a compound tibia/fibula fracture that got infected. I spent two weeks in the intensive care unit, and I was told over and over again how lucky I was to still have a leg. Those words gave me a new outlook on life. I realized that life can change in the blink of an eye, and I do not have time to take things for granted. You know how the saying goes, “Live each day like it’s your last.” b. One thing these scars have given me is an even better sense of humor. Growing up my dad always told me that you have to be able to laugh at yourself and not to take life to seriously. Occasionally, I see people staring at my scars or they say something like, “Aw, you poor thing,” so I often times make a joke about it. This lightens up the situation and shows that I am okay and comfortable with my leg’s appearance. II. a. My time spent in the hospital is what lead me to pursue a career in nursing and to obtain my nursing identification badge. I had nurses that made my stay a positive experience. From that, I decided I wanted to be able to do that for patients. I have always enjoyed being around others and genuinely care about their well-being. I choose nursing as a career is because I was a certified nurse assistant and I loved to help the residents, I enjoy caring for others. What stopped me for caring for others was my kidney disease. I could not care for others, because I needed someone to care for me. Consequently, this is why I am so passionate about helping others, because I know at first hand, what it feels like to be on the other side. January 2015, I received a kidney and I am doing great. It’s amazing how a horrific and negative life changing event can encourage and guide you in the path of your future. The end result may not be visible when it first takes place, but the process of a recovery can be extremely educational. You see, I was provided the opportunity of job shadowing firsthand the fields of athletic training and physical therapy due to a knee injury. I believe the majority of people would consider a severely damaged knee a dramatic setback in life. I was able to find the silver lining during the recovery.
The adolescent stage can be a questionable time in one’s life. You are stuck between adulthood and childhood and still expected to decide who you are somewhere along the way. The other factors in life can make this self discovery very difficult; you are surrounded by other peers that are also trying to camouflage themselves in high school so they can avoid being singled out. Adolescence is a mere struggle to fit in to the puzzle held together by society and it’s standards.
I chose nursing as my profession because nursing is my ideal profession. In nursing, I can provide others with the care and the knowledge they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I can also give others the love and attention they need to be proud of the life they live. I think that society is very vulnerable and I want to make great contributions to the world of nursing. Holding my knee's tightly to my chest, I can't help but notice the faded scars that line my shins. Each mark tells a story of adventures and mishaps I've encountered over my seventeen years - constant reminders of mistakes and discoveries I've made thus far in my shortly lived life. Growing up, I always felt out of place. When everyone else was running around in the hot, sun, thinking of nothing, but the logistics of the game they were playing. I would be sat on the curb, wondering what it was that made them so much different from me. Many people question where they belong in the world or what their purpose in life is. Like many of those people I did the same. I was probably a lot younger than many who do. I was thirteen years old dealing with drama, losing friends, gaining new friends, and many different life events. I remember sitting in class thinking what am I doing here? Where do I fit in? Where do I belong? I was not like most of the students in my school. I was mature, kind hearted, and helpful. I wanted everyone to get a long and I wanted to make a difference in people's lives. Being thirteen I had know idea what I was doing or thinking. Soon the thought of what I could do to make a difference became clear.
a) For many years now I have aspired to be a Pediatrician. My mother is a radiologist technologist so I’ve grown up around the medical field. One of these topics includes understanding the different stages of life and the psychological development of people of all ages. In Psychology class we learned about numerous Psychologists who had theories related to this important concept. One of the psychologist’s was named Erik Erikson. Erikson believed that there are eight stages of development across the lifespan and during each stage, there is a specific psychosocial crisis that most people face. Since I am planning on working with high school students, it will be essential that I fully understand the stage of development that they are in. Since high school students are in their adolescence, the central issue they would be dealing with would be identity versus role confusion. As Erikson explained, during this time “Teenagers work at refining a sense of self by testing roles and then integrating them to form a single identity, or they become confused about who they are” (Myers 209). Adolescence is a critical time in development because people are trying to figure out their identity and where they fit in society. Studies have shown that adolescents who have positive relations with others in their peer group tend to have a better sense of their well-being and have a more positive outlook on life. On the other hand, some adolescents have a hard time fitting in and becoming part of a peer group. This causes much stress on the individual and can cause the adolescent to isolate themselves from
My reasons for selecting a career in nursing stem directly from my desire to help our prospering population and community. This career appeals to me because it embodies what I strive to become, a person of influence, a guide, a respected adult, a mentor, and a person that can be trusted and looked up to with great passion. In Erikson’s Identity vs. Role Confusion stage, I thought, “Who am I?” countless times like many other adolescents. I occupied much of my time trying to construct a firm identity of myself, which I now realized did more harm than good. Letting myself explore different interests would have helped me find my identity than me trying to fake some firm identity.
