The first time the term "space exploration" was coined was during the space race between the United States of America and the Union of Socialist Republics. People have argued that this war took place from as early as 1947 to as late as 1991. During this time the USA and the USSR were racing to see which country could reign supreme in terms of human spaceflight. Even thought the time period in which this race occurred has ended does not mean that space exploration stopped affected every human being. All though the space race ended, everything from technology, society, and the economy is still being affected to this very day.

Space activities have affected math, advancements in science, and broadened engineering education. They have even led to more philosophical questions that include topics such as civil rights, gender, and status. There have been breakthroughs in inventions that have allowed humans to become more aware about pressing issues. Satellites have also increased awareness for social issues on Earth. Being able to see Earth from space have spiked a debate over the topic of global warming. It has even gotten to the point where humans question their sense of place in the universe and have searched for extraterrestrial life. These have been displayed in literature and arts. People have used these technological advances to affect their social lives and problems such as pollution from cars, factories that affect atmosphere, being able to foresee natural disasters before they happen which is able to give people enough time to prepare and even evacuate the possibly affected areas, and the disintegration of the North and South
