Also, out of these shootings came ideas for ways to be alert and ready for any chaos that might happen in schools, and ways to stay safe, including code red drills and lockdowns. School shootings are tragic and there are so many victims, so many innocent lives lost at the hands of hate. We must find a solution to this type of violence. But, to get to the solution we must identify the roof of the problem. In addition to the research on school shootings Hockley says, “Solutions begin with education about what causes gun violence. Her group encourages "Promise Communities" at the local level, which receive tools from the charity, all those who join Sandy Hook Promise are asked to pledge to work to end gun violence” (“School Violence”, School Violence). In other words, one solution to this problem was to make an organization that would spread the word to everyone about control gun violence throughout the world. The Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms, but only in cases of self-defense and hunting for food. However, the use of guns has drastically changed since 1791 when the amendment was implemented. Today, guns are not solely used in their intended ways. Since 2010, over eighty-seven school shootings have occurred within American grade schools, high schools, and universities, resulting in approximately 107 injuries and 109 murders of innocent students. The two most deadly shootings in the world occurred in the United States: the Virginia Tech University Massacre which left thirty-two dead and Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting which left twenty-eight dead. Each new shooting prompts a debate about gun control laws and leaves citizens wondering about the accessibility of guns; any United States citizen over the age of twenty-one that does not have any previous felonies is able to easily receive a gun license. Forty-nine out of the sixty-one school shootings that occurred between 1982 and 2012 legally obtained firearms. The statistics become even more outstanding: seventy nine percent of all shooters have been diagnosed with a mental illness or disability, including the Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook shooters, Seung-Hui Cho and Adam Lanza. On December 14th 2012, just 11 days before Christmas, an awful tragedy happened in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty-six people were shot at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. This awful event left a lot of unanswered questions and rumors about that day. The reason for that is because the shooter killed himself after shooting twenty young children and six adults. This tragedy open the eyes of everyone; made you want to hug your loves one just a little tighter, appreciate what you still have and never take a day for granted. Even our president Barack Obama felt the pain of all those who lost their loved ones in this event. He insured everyone that he will do everything in his power to make sure a tragedy like this will not happen again. However, did you know that there have been over 44 school shootings since the tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary shooting? I know as a future teacher and mother I want to make sure my children are safe in this world and even at school. I want to be able to make a difference in this issue and have some knowledge to have I can do that. The society should understand what really happen during the Sandy Hook event, the reasons behind why school shootings/violence are rapidly increasing each year, and have some knowledge about what we, as a society, can do to help in order for us to start seeing a decrease of these events.
The United States will not soon forget the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut that came just two weeks before Christmas last year. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of twenty students and eight adults. Although the event shocked the nation, the rampage shootings are nothing new. Over the years, many families have lost loved ones to these horrific events. As a result, these mass shootings such as the one that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary caught public attention, leading to a push to find the cause of these events.
On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza broke into Sandy Hook Elementary School and fatally shot twenty children and six adult staff members in a mass murder, including himself. To overcome the devastation of the shooting, the country must learn and improve from tragic events like the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.
It is a sad time in American history when one can easily recount recent school shootings in their own area. This ease stems from a sharp increase in the number of firearms brought into elementary and middle schools across the country, with an intense focus on the issue beginning after the shooting of 20 children from Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. Most school shooters are male, white, and often upper middle class. They are also more, often than not, under some type of mental stress that is causing them to create this type of violence in our communities. In fact, many school shooters are never suspected of doing any harm to their peers and teachers until it is much too late.
As us Americans we are actually making the stereotype of we always carry guns around sound true to the rest of the world considering that, we are the “31% percent of all public mass shootings which at least four people are killed.” (TheWeek.com) But under a broader definition USA counted 346 mass shootings including shooting deaths of four or more victims in a 17- year period. The worst part about this information is this year we already have recorded 249 mass shootings in about 7 months close to the same amount USA counted over 17 years! This is a problem that must be solve for the safety in this country but also prevent more mass shooting from happening. “According to a Mother Jones study: Only 23 percent have been treated for mental illness.” ( Gallagher )
They suggested that not only mental illness but other factors such as social relationships, firearm access during emotional moments etc also lead to gun violence. However, they failed to cite this with strong facts, numbers etc. Reports suggest that up to 60% of executioners of mass shootings in the United States since 1970 displayed symptoms including acute paranoia, delusions, and depression before committing their crimes[4,5]. In another article “Rates of Household Firearm Ownership and Homicide Across US Regions and States, 1988–1997”[6], the authors emphasized on the “association between rates of household firearm ownership and homicide across the United States, by age group”. On a sunny spring day in April 1999, a suburban school named Columbine High in Littleton, Colorado found itself under attack by two of its own students. (http://www.knowgangs.com) In less than fifteen minutes of the first lunch period on that Tuesday, two armed students killed thirteen and wounded twenty-one fellow classmates before they turned the guns on themselves - the most devastating school shooting in U.S. history. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the only school shooting; about thirty-five students die every year from school shootings. This generation comes from violence, hatred, and ignorance- the three principal factors that cause school shootings.
“The more energy they have to gin up to execute their plan, the harder it will be to do so” (Newman). When “Would be shooters” are faced with a challenge they most likely don’t go through with their plan. The dedicated shooters are those who intend on finding guns and shooting people, those who have the drive. “Totally dedicated shooters” are the type of people who wont give up whether the guns are accessible to them legally or illegally. Dedicated shooters have a plan of action and intend on going through with it. There are many different types of school violence. The one that gets the most public attention is school shootings. The term school shooting is basically defined as an act where a student, school staff member, or intruder from the outside commits an act on the school campus. One of the most well known school shootings took place at Columbine High School near Littleton, Colorado. On a Tuesday April 20,1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, students at Columbine High School, took the lives of thirteen other students before taking the lives of their own. When we think of events like this, we have many questions that go through our mind. Thoughts like why did this happen, could it have been prevented, and how did impact the individuals involved just to name a few. There are probably several more thoughts that go through the minds of a nation when we hear about traumatic evens such as a school shooting.
The issue of gun violence in schools is an issue that needs to be addressed. Without the proper solutions and awareness the issue will continue and be a growing problem for future generations. School shootings are occurring more and frequently in today’s society, especially in the United States (Scott Zimmer). In 2018 alone there have been 18 school shootings. That’s 18 school shootings in 96 days. That’s an average of 6 shootings in a month. That number is outrageous and unacceptable. Teachers and parents should be aware of mental health issues, bullying and prevention, stronger security regulations in schools, and factors to look for in troubled students. Awareness of these factors could be the start in the direction towards decreasing the number of school shootings that happen annually.
In South Carolina, a two year old managed to get a hold of a gun and accidentally shoot their grandmother ( Ingraham ). Stories like these makes it clear that not everyone can be responsible enough to become gun owners. These days, there isn’t much that’s required from a person to purchase a weapon. So it should not be a surprise for us when a deadly weapon gets into the a wrong hands. Because of this, the United States is notorious for their massacres with the murderer legally purchasing their weapons. So in conclusion, the second amendment should be tightened because it’ll prevent accidental shootings, school shootings, and massacres.
One side of the debate is that America has a serious problem with gun violence. On average 32 American Citizens are killed by guns while 140 are treated in an emergency room for gunshot wounds every single day. Also, “the U.S. Firearm homicide rate is 20 times higher than the combined rates of 22 countries that are our peers in wealth and population.” Secondly, gun violence has a major impact on American youth. An average of eight children and teens under the age of 20 are killed by guns every day (Brady Campaign). Additionally, American children die by guns eleven times as often as children in high income countries.
