Without firearms, many of these individuals would not possess the means to follow through with ending their lives.
The rapid increase in gun ownership for the purpose of self-defense is also affected how criminals acquire their firearms. Napolitano feels as though “…The killer stops only when he is killed. But requires someone else with a gun to be there” (Napolitano). Admittedly, guns do help control some incidents of crime. We use guns to defend against acts of terror and when citizens do choose to use their guns for self-defense or the defense of someone else, some are successful at preventing the death of others. Owning a gun could establish a level of safety for homeowners living in a hostile community or even prevent someone from falling victim to a heinous crime. The military also uses guns to fight threats coming from overseas or threats found here in America. However, this does not distract society away from the horrendous mayhem cause by firearms or individuals with firearms. It is not only heart wrenching, but devastating to hear that innocent children have been killed in school by an unstable school shooter. Or the parents and love ones that come home to a suicide victim who used the family gun intended for self-defense to end their life. And the criminal organizations that take advantage of the weakness present in our current gun laws to buy weapons to terrorizes unsuspecting
