Is Healthcare a right?

Healthcare is not a need that everyone can meet on their own even though it is a fundamental need of all. We are required to pay very pricey premiums for insurance that most of the times does not meet all our needs, while deductibles, copays, and out of pocket cost keep us from getting the care we need. Low and middle class pay a huge share of our hard earned income for healthcare. All consumers are one major illness or job loss away from serious hardship from medical bills. Despite the Affordable Care Act, these problems are still present. The human right to health means that everyone has the right to the highest standard of physical and mental health, which would include access to medical care, food, housing, a clean environment, and healthy working conditions. This means there should be universal access to all and that it must be affordable, accessible, and physically attainable to everyone. Adequate healthcare must be available in all geographic regions and communities to provide immunizations, health maintenance, such as yearly wellness exams and preventative medicine. Health care institutions and providers must respect dignity, provide culturally appropriate care and respect medical ethics and protect confidentiality. The quality of health care must meet the standards of care regardless of the person’s ability to pay. There should be no discrimination in regards to race, ethnicity, income, social status or religion. Individuals and communities must be able to take an active role in decisions regarding their
