“Is Being Different A Bad Thing” Different, what comes to your mind when you hear this word. Color, race, name, appearance or maybe beliefs? Different is when I am only hijabi in a class of twenty or so students and sometimes that scarf on my head speaks louder than me. Though we’re created equal, we have differences that make us unique to one another. It makes more sense when I put it this way, although, how effective is this implement in society today. Do we respect each other's difference or consistently label one another. A simple rule “Treat others the same way you want to be treated” could alone make the world a different place. It would eliminate the hatred that creates discrimination. Though it might not be apparent today in America it is definitely present. Prejudice and stereotype are the causes of discrimination. Many fall victim to discrimination and racism, Unfortunately, the muslim community is highly impacted. No movement, war or protest could erase discrimination. However, they created laws against discrimination and made it possible for us to live in one country despite our differences. According to an article on www.today.yougov.com, a survey poll asked if most muslims in the U.S made a good neighbor or not? people that knew a muslim voted yes over ones that did not. This goes to confirm that knowing a muslim can make a difference and lower discrimination. For instance, not too long ago we were renting in an apartment building in Bay Ridge, surprisingly enough, we were the only Muslim family to there and while there were warm welcomes and hello’s, there were also hateful rude expressions.
