Plagiarism is an extraordinarily large topic these days. Many teachers are spending hours slamming the thought in students’ heads that plagiarism is evil. Teachers have lengthy lectures and some even make their students write a report on plagiarism. Most teachers have a strong, negative opinion about plagiarism, but a student’s perspective can be entirely different. Plagiarism is defined as “an act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of the author’s work as one’s own, as by not crediting the original author.” Instructors and teachers seem to know the narrow line between plagiarism and honestly using your own work. In fact, nearly forty-four percent of students who have used academic dishonesty as a resource say that they plagiarized because the teachers did not offer help. There are other reasons too. Some students feel there is no other way to finish their assignments because they are too busy. They possibly have too many classes, so they resort to plagiarism, where instead, they should talk to their professors and try to find a compromise. However, some students also say, “I’m not smart enough” or “My work isn’t good enough.” They should do their best and ask for help instead of cheating, since the main goal in school is to learn. Some students don 't know exactly what plagiarism is. Teachers should gently go over the subject and teach what it is, but ignorance is never an excuse. Some students don’t know how to properly cite their papers. Just like not knowing what plagiarism is, ignorance is not an excuse. Almost everyone can agree that a large part of plagiarism is when someone copies and pastes a full writing and uses it as their own, without giving the author credit. The problem with that form of plagiarism is that it is obviously stealing. Someone worked very hard to make that reading; taking it and using it as your own is stealing, if you do so intentionally. The blurry part of plagiarism is if it is wrong if it occurs by accident. In my own personal opinion, I think plagiarism is defined by the natural right and wrongs. No matter what faith you believe in or if you have a belief, you know if you are doing something wrong. If you have a deep down feeling you did something that was wrong, then that is plagiarism. If you honestly tried to use your own knowledge and tried to cite all the authors to the best of you ability, you did the right thing. If I was an author and a student forgot to put a in text note, I would not be mad. If they copy and pasted my writing and did it knowing fully, I would believe that student did the wrong
