Stereotypes
Stereotype is a wide topic that covers many aspects in the society. Stereotypes are harmful because it makes an impulsive judgment based on immediately observable characteristics such as race, gender, and religion. Stereotype can be defined as a common belief towards a certain group of people or an individual. There are many types of stereotype and the major ones are race, gender, religion, income and age and disability. There is negative and positive stereotype but many people ignore the negative side of it and they divert their attention on positive stereotype, this i causes many problems because many people suffer because of negative stereotype. They argue that African-American racial stereotype is just and it is of great help to this group of people. They disagree with all the allegations associated with it such as race discrimination or prejudice. They base their arguments on different facts which indicate some elements of truth and that is why many people support their arguments. They mostly argue on the African-Americans leaders and athletics that have made it in life. This means that they take the positive side of this stereotype which terms black-Americans as the best leaders because of their informed decisions and also their ability to do well in athletics and other sports. They argue that African-Americans make good decision and they are devoted in their work and that is why they are preferred in leadership positions and that is what define African-Americans stereotype on one side. On the other side, their stereotype is defined by their success in sports and mostly athletics. They ignore any other believe and that is why they conclude that African-American racial stereotype is just and of importance to black Americans. In conclusion, there is no argument that can prove African-American racial stereotype is just. This is because it is evident that this stereotype cause mental complications, lowers the performance and self-esteem of all African-Americans. The argument that explains the other side has some elements of truth but when both sides are weighed, the negative side has more weight and that is why it is completely unjust. A stereotype is an exaggerated generalization used to describe a group of people. Discrimination is the unequal treatment of different categories of people. An example of a stereotype would be the generalization that a majority of African American youth are gangbangers or criminals. An example of discrimination would be the mocking of an Asian student’s accent each time they spoke in class. Stereotyping and discrimination still take place today whether in minority communities or in the communities of those who hold the majority, though these incidents are not as prevalent in non minority
Stereotypes are formed when a person sees a certain race, religious group or ethnic group behaving a certain way enough that they form an impression of that group as being that certain way. And it is considered a stereotype because they apply their impression to the group as a whole
In my opinion stereotyping has become like a superstition. Children these days pick up subtle cues from their mothers and use them in the form of stereotypes. Children and parents don’t realize that they are mistaken by falsified beliefs. In my opinion it is not worthy for a person to quickly correlate positive and negative terms with black and white faces or by race. One particular race might get teased with nicknames like rude and disrespectful. Various nationalities are stereotyped as friendly or unfriendly. These situations arise stereotype threat. In this situation s/he has the fear of doing something that would accidently confirm a negative stereotype. Even if the person does not believe the stereotype s/he may experience threat. People find very disturbing to accept stereotypes, they have pain of being treated unfairly. I opine that people perform poorly when they feel they are being stereotyped. They face obscurity in making rational decisions. Stereotype people also build in aggressive action towards others. Chinese people eat cats or dogs. Blue is a color for boys. Women are bad drivers. Those are the most common phrases I've heard about stereotyping. However, stereotypes are assumptions that are assigned to groups of people because of their religion, nationality, gender, race, clothing, among others. In our daily life, there are negative and positive stereotypes, and it is possible that we all use stereotypes, all the time, without knowing it. Also, in my life I experienced this issue because of my ethnicity and my gender.
Stereotypes about the African American culture have existed since dispersal of African descent, dating back to the colonial era. They have evolved from slavery, to black face shows, to the modern drug lords and welfare queens. But one stereo typed that has remained constant is that African Americans are inferior to white people in every aspect of life. Through this very stereo type black people are forced to combat prejudice and discrimination in their everyday routine.
Stereotypes can be defined as sweeping generalizations about members of a certain race, religion, gender, nationality, or other group. They are made everyday in almost every society. We develop stereotypes when we are unable or unwilling to obtain all the information we would need to make fair judgments about people or situations. By stereotyping, we assume that a person or group has certain characteristics. Quite often, we develop these ideas about people who are members of groups with which we have not had firsthand contact. Stereotyping usually leads to unfair results, such as discrimination, racial profiling, and unnecessary violence, all behaviors which need to be stopped.
Non-African Americans that choose to listen to African American stereotypes are pretty much saying that they only need to meet one African American to know what all the others are like. This is a big problem for African Americans that don’t even meet the criteria of those said stereotypes. All African Americans are judged one way. Are black men acknowledge for their positive contributions and their brain beneath the body? “There is no study that shows that African-American people aren’t as smart or hard working as Whites” (Senghas). Several African American men don’t get equal opportunity in the hiring process because of their race and the stereotypes behind them like lazy and criminal. Society fails at identifying how hard African Americans work to get a job or when they have one just to avoid discrimination. For decades now, popular culture has been tainted by the perpetual use of racial stereotypes that come to us through music, television, and film. These reactionary stereotypes are often unaddressed and often permeate the minds of those too young to understand what a stereotype is. Therefore the effects of these conventionalized ideas continue to prevail throughout our society as they are repeatedly swept under the rug. However, although seemingly less common, there are also forms of media with goals of bringing attention to toxic stereotypes while still entertaining their audiences. African-Americans, Arabs, and Latin@’s are three of the most prevalent minority groups represented in the media and by analyzing the films Aladdin, Django Unchained, and the television show Devious Maids, one can become much more aware of the racial stereotypes that they are calling attention to.
Stereotypes and generalizations about African Americans and their culture have evolved within American society dating back to the colonial years of settlement, particularly after slavery became a racial institution that was heritable. African Americans have been stereotyped for many years. As with every other identifiable group, stereotypes continue today. African Americans are often portrayed as violent, lazy and very religious. They are also portrayed as having a love for fried chicken, watermelon, corn beard, kool aide those are just many of their stereotypes being made of African Americans. African Americans have been the subject of cruel, demeaning, and shameful stereotypes in the media for the longest and it is still going on today. Whether on stage, on the movie screen, or in music, or even right before your eyes on the television screen some people still can’t see the signs of African American stereotyping and it needs to be stopped.
It also was one of the main points within the classroom. Stereotyping is defined as a fixed idea or image about a race or thing that is oversimplified. For many years, people have to ask themselves who they are, whether it is their culture, family, or even where they come from, their race has been put into a category, which they cannot escape. In the text Race and Ethnicity as a Source of belongingness, it states “ Our identities locate us in social spaces and tell us where we belong” (Doing Race 384), but sometimes it is forced upon people due to stereotyping other races. In the education system, there is a question where the stereotype can be seen in the education system. I big part in negative stereotyping is within education. There is a Stereotype that African Americans are not as intelligent as Whites. This was the drive for many segregated schools. African Americans have fought a long time to be equal to whites. One of these fights was the Brown vs. Bored case in 1954, where the court declared the segregation of White Schools and Black schools to be unconstitutional. After this court, case there was still a war on education, but there were school finance reforms as an effort to help this new law against segregation. In the text Understanding the Achievement Gap, it states “Gaps in school, in access to qualify teachers, and in access to higher education were smaller in the 1970s than they had been before” (Doing Race 298). This means that higher education for African Americans were very slim and there was more segregation within schools after the Brown vs. Bored
Modern stereotypes are violent, brutish African American male. The female is lazy and the Welfare Mother.((Peffley Hurwitz & Sniderman, 1997). Recent studies of racial stereotype is 1991 in Los Angeles when police beat Rodney King an African American and they responded to a domestic dispute among African Americans known as Right out of Gorillas in the mist. (Plous & Williams, 1995, p. 812). In 1992 a director of Alcohol and drug administration referred to the youth as monkey in the jungle. (Plous & Williams, 1995, p. 812 ).
Everyone has heard the saying don’t judge a book by a cover. Sadly every minute of the day someone gets judged because of assumptions that are not correct. These assumptions overtime eventually lead to stereotypes. A stereotype is an image or idea of a particular type of person. Stereotyping a person is seen in many differents aspects such as race, groups, beliefs, appearance, etc. An individual may ask why people are stereotyped or stereotype. In reality stereotyping helps people categorize the different type of people. It narrows down the options of who one might want to associate with. Stereotyping can have its negatives, it makes people ignore how others really are. It may lead to a person not wanting to hang out with another person because of the stereotype that persons group has. Everyday the general public use cars for the means of transportation. But what about when people use their car for more than transportation, car enthusiasts often modify their cars to their likings. Enthusiasts often join car clubs to share their common interests with other car enthusiasts. Often the people in car clubs have a stereotype of being juvenile, racing a lot, low-life bums, and ghetto when actually most do not have those characteristics.
Stereotypes play an important role in today's society and particularly in Propaganda. According to the Webster's Dictionary stereotyping is defined as a fixed conventional notion or conception of an individual or group of people, heldby a number of people. Stereotypes can be basic or complex generalizations which people apply to individuals or groups based on their appearance, behaviour and beliefs. Stereotypes are found everywhere. Though our world seems to be improving in many ways it seems almost impossible to liberate it from stereotypes.
Stereotypes are a fixed image of all members of a culture, group, or race, usually based on limited and inaccurate information resulting from the minimal contact with these stereotyped groups. Stereotypes have many forms: people are stereotyped according to their religion, race, ethnicity, age, gender, color, or national origins. This kind of intolerance is focused on the easily observable characteristics of groups of people. In general, stereotypes reduce individuals to a rigid and inflexible image that doesn't account for the multi-dimensional nature of human beings. One example of stereotypes is the categorization of the Jews in the Elizabethan era.
