Argument Against a Ban on Boxing
The entertaining sport of boxing, an athletic event consisting of
numerous health conflictions, has been receiving some heat from legal and
medical advocates, yet “Some of the qualities that have open boxing to
attack have, at the same time, been its salvation”(Sammons 235). Boxing,
which has been in existence and evolved from other forms of fighting longer
than this country has been established, is a skill, talent, an ambition, and for
most professional fighters, a love. Professional boxing, like virtually any
physical recreation, is performed so that there are health risks, yet it is the
athletes right to decide their personal levels of danger. Indeed, boxing
discloses America’s disposition towards tradition.
During the United States’ brief history, Americans have consistently
managed to acquire cultural, social, political, and intellectual institutions
from England, leaving no surprise to why the modern controversial sport of
boxing, or prizefighting, traveled over sea to America. This high-demanding
sporting event definitely must be one of the ultimate exceptions of our time.
The 1820s and 1830s were marked by increased urbanization and
industrialization, which stimulated a need for new and accessible diversions.
The mood of society at large was captured in Beyond the Ring with this
classic line, “Men, women, and children who cannot live on gravity alone, need
something to satisfy their lighter moods and hours”(4). Leisure’s and, more
importantly, boxing’s opponents lost further ground as the giant cities
attracted more and more immigrants who were unfamiliar to limitations upon
amusements and games.
As Jeffrey Sammons so concisely explains, “It is because of, r...

...nd upper class men “don’t mind professional baseball and
football, but to be labeled a ‘prizefighter’ is something they can’t quite
swallow”(237).
In opposition to my current beliefs, Elliot J. Gorn, the author of The
Manly Art, believes that “boxers are victims of racial and class
discrimination, that the ring encourages voilence, and that pugilism appeals
to all that is barbarous in man”(11).
In Conclusion, a ban on boxing is not only illogical but impossible! In my mind,
if you want to minimize the number of actual life-long injuries related to
sports, you would be better off coming up with elaborated rules for motor
sports or rock climbing. Who wants to terminate a sport that has been
entertaining the world for centuries? How could medical ethics eliminate a
sport which participates in the Olympics? Yes, boxing may be risky but so is
life.
Yes they might get paid handsomely but the lifelong damages it causes to the boxers are overwhelming. Life expectancy goes down even more when it comes to boxing because boxers have no head protection so if they get hit in the head it will cause severe
The culture in Mexico is very fond of soccer as it’s the country’s most popular sport, where males of all ages play anywhere they can and leaving the national team as cult heroes. Even though soccer is the main sport, following behind it is boxing, where Mexico has produced many world boxing champions as boxing remains popular among all socioeconomic ...

Have you ever wondered, “What is the difference between MMA and boxing?” Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fights originated as hand-to-hand combat performed as a sport called Pankration from the greek words Pan and Kratas, meaning “all powers” (Shamrock). Often a practitioner of one of the skill groups in martial arts challenged a practitioner of a different skill for ultimate bragging rights (Shamrock). In 393C.E. Roman emperor Theodosius the first banned the Olympic games, spelling the end of Pankration as a popular sport (Shamrock). This style of fighting later resurfaced in the twentieth century in Brazil via a combat sport known as vale tudo”,anything goes” (“Encyclopedia Britannica”). MMA
The Johnson-Jeffries fight was significant in many ways. Johnson and other African Americans helped prove that blacks could be dominate at sports. The knowledge that blacks can be good at sports changed, but the acceptance did not. Jack Johnson was the world heavyweight champion and was the first black heavyweight champion. White people couldn’t stand having a black athlete on top especially with their social darwinstic view point that whites are better at everything. This is summarized by “ Johnson now ruled the boxing world, much to the chagrin and horror of whites.” The events before and after the fight tell us that whites thought they were of higher stature in every way than people of color in every way. In this context masculinity and
In conclusion, both books take a differing view to bullfighting. However, in the end, they both tend to agree with Barthes that this is not really a sport. However, the view of this paper may be biased by the cultural values of contemporary times and the declining aesthetic value of violence.
Although some people still oppose the fighting style and physicality of MMA, the benefits clearly outweigh the consequences. With strict and organized regulation of MMA events, proper care and insurance risk can be minimized, but it’s necessary to se...
Are Pit Bulls deserving of being banned from the United States? Are breed specific laws effective? Is there a better way to handle dangerous dogs? Pit Bulls have many people who believe that all should be put down and that they are a dangerous breed. These people do not understand that there are many other ways to handle the situation, that having these laws can make things worse or not change anything, and that each dog is an individual. I believe that breed specific laws against dogs, Pit Bulls especially, are ineffective and I will explain why exactly these laws should be removed and how alternative routes would be better.
Dodgeball is a game in which players on two teams try to throw large balls at each other while avoiding being hit themselves. The game was originally played in elementary school. However the sport has recently emerged as a popular middle school, high school and college sport. It has become popular due to its versatile range of playing options it can be played almost anywhere. The main goal of the game is the participants of one team is to eliminate all members of the opposing team by hitting them within the ole days rubber balls but nowadays foam balls, catching a ball thrown by someone of the opposite team, or forcing them to go outside the boundaries of the court in the act of dodging a ball. Now let me give you a brief history of what some parents are considering a
...t and leisure, to creating equality amongst everyone. The history of sports has been marked by division and discrimination but also has affected modern popular culture and changing social attitudes and standards towards gender equality, social-class and race. During the Gilded Age and after, sports finally broke the barrier between gender, social-class, and equality. It allowed blacks to be able to play sports with whites, women to play sports with men, and it allowed the poor to play sports with the middle-class and wealthy. Not only did sports in the Gilded Age allow barriers to be broken, but it also allowed sports to be shared amongst different races, women, and social-classes. Different sports such as prizefighting, boxing, and swimming were introduced by the minorities in society, and have now become some of the most popular sports today.
As skateboarding evolved, it was once something kids do in their free time, later became a prospering sport. This started many new changes to our local cities. “No skateboarding” signs are being posted places that skateboarders would go to practice. Architects are finding new ways to redesign structures like benches and handrails in the city, in order to lower the abundance of skateboarder in an area. All these changes have resulted in a good amount of money spent redoing everything to prevent skateboarding, but nothing is being done to give skateboarders a safe place to skate. For young teens whose only transportation is a skateboard, they can only travel so far, and skateparks are not close enough. To eliminate the amount of skateboarders in heavily populated areas, I propose that cities invest more money into building skateparks so skateboarders have a safe place to practice the sport.
“Second is nothing, first is everything,” you should hear this very often. Fifty percent of the time it is coming out of a Professional “doping” athletes’ mouth. As a pro athlete you would actually think they had some better sense than this, sadly they don’t though. It’s so bad that they don’t even realize that they are hurting others as much as they are hurting themselves. Basically you are cheating, like there is no other word or way to put it. You take the right character of any sport by doping. You acting like you are the best and can’t nobody beat you is going to get you nowhere, but at sitting on the bed looking stupid. Now, as a pro athlete you should already know that you have kids and even adults looking up to you, you’re like their “superhero”, so why do something that you know that they are going to try and do. Have you ever just stopped to think any of this? Doping in Sports should not be allowed.
In conclusion this sport should be outlawed and the price for participating in it should be a higher
Boxing Should Not be Banned In recent years, there have been many campaigns to try and have boxing
Canadian doctors are looking to ban full-contact sports for their brutality. The doctors worry about the potential for serious injuries. The more common injuries are broken limbs, lacerations, and brain damage. During an event in Vancouver, a large number of the fighters received emergency care at the local hospital. The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) would also like sports like boxing to be banned as well. They believe that other combative sports, such as hockey and football, are different than MMA because the main goal is not to ultimately knock out your opponent. The main reason that they wish to ban sports like Ultimate Fighting and Boxing is to prevent serious injuries from occurring. This clearly shows tha...
