Anomalisa is an extraordinary stop motion feature based around the premise of feeling lonely. The loss of passion in Michael’s day to day encounters is evident from his standoffish demeanor to both the man sitting next to him on the plane and the taxi driver. It is ironic that as a motivational speaker for customer service, his conversations with these strangers are so dull. From the beginning he has a clear detachment from the people around him, almost as if they were more of an annoyance. When the film started the first thing that stood out to me was the way they modeled the faces. One scene in particular was during his dream when he was walking through the hall to the general manager’s office. The green setting as well as the dim lighting made for an uneasy atmosphere. When he enters the general manager’s office the lighting comes only from the fish tanks and the mysterious pit in the center of the room giving the space an ominous sense. The lighting method did lack in some areas though. the biggest problem I found was the subsurface scattering in the models. This killed the illusion of scale and made it abundantly clear that the models were fairly small. This problem happened mostly on the hands and the ears of the models. Toward the end of his dream, the general manager as well as all of the workers confesses their love to him asking to be with anyone of them as long as he is not with Lisa. It was during this dream that Michael finally snaps realizing everyone is the same. Lisa is the only person he views as being different. He believes he has finally found someone who he can make him feel loved and wants to leave his wife and son to peruse this feeling.
