Annotated Bibliography SPE 3370 Children’s Books Elliot, Rebecca. (2014). Just Because. Oxford: Lion Hudson. This is a heartwarming picture book about a young boy and his sister, Clemmie, and all of the incredible things that they do together. They go on adventures, discover things, and play for hours on end. He talks about how much his sister means to him and how wonderful she is, but it isn’t until later in the book that you realize that she has an intellectual disability. We learn that she shows many adaptive behaviors and that even though she is older than her brother, she can’t do many of the things that he can. It reads from the sister’s perspective and her questioning his behaviors and wonders why his mind always seems to be in a different place. The book also touches on Jesse’s sister trying to cope with students at school teasing him and what she should do about it. The book is very realistic and tells the story in a way that is relatable to children. The story is perpetuated by Trudy’s struggle with understanding her brother’s disability and trying to make sense of why it happened to him and not her. Trudy grapples with feelings of guilt and a desire to bring awareness to her brother’s condition. Through her talents in media broadcasting and videography, she brings her brother’s story to her community and finally comes to terms with the fact that although she may mature, her brother will not. This is a turning point for her to accept that there’s only so much she can do, but she will always love him all the same. Teenagers have so many journeys going on at once in their life as they try to figure out who they are and what their place is in the world. This story is powerful testament to the struggles of being a caretaker of a person with sever disabilities and the importance of always being there for them, but always being there for themselves to.
